07 Grand Cherokee Laredo overheat problems

Ok so I've got an 07 Grand Cherokee Laredo 3.7 V6 that's having some overheating issues. At first I thought it was the thermostat, which was a problem because I replaced it and the old one was sealed shut, not allowing coolant to get into the engine. So I thought all was well and topped off my fluid levels and assumed it fixed. The next day the transmission went into protect mode and would not shift out of 3rd gear. It then built up enough pressure to shoot the plastic cap off of the transmission tube and was spewing ATF back out of the tube because it was too hot. When it is cool in the morning it works fine, but in the afternoon when it gets hot this issue happens again. I watched the coolant cycle to the engine and back to the reservoir through the radiator cap just fine so I know my coolant lines aren't plugged. The radiator fan is kicking on when the engine heats up and when the compressor is running. However, I'm at a loss as it why the transmission is overheating and locking me out after 3rd gear. Anyone experience any of these issues or have any ideas? It's not coding so I can't run any checks that way. Thank you.

Re: 07 Grand Cherokee Laredo overheat problems

Welcome to the garage.
How high is the coolant temperature going? Did you check, with the radiator cap removed, if there is any movement in the coolant visible? A loose impeller on the water pump could drastically reduce the coolant flow and cause high coolant temperatures.

Thank you for the reply.
Yes I did check under the cap to make sure the coolant is circulating, and it is properly. That was the first issue I had but the thermostat was bad so I replaced it. The issue now is the transmission. It won't shift after 3rd gear and it's getting really hot and spewing fluid back up the tube. The temperature gauge reads normal so it's not generating a code to run.

Re: 07 Grand Cherokee Laredo overheat problems

You donīt get a transmission overheat message? If the TCM puts the transmission in limp mode, it should set a fault code. Did you check if the transmission breather tube is not blocked, causing an increase in the internal pressure, which finally pops the plastic cap and let the fluid come out? Maybe the tube is kinked at some place.

Re: 07 Grand Cherokee Laredo overheat problems

Nope, no overheat message from the transmission, it just goes into limp mode and spits out fluid. There could be a kink in the line. Tomorrow I'm going to flush the whole system and put new fluid in there and check the pan to make sure there's no build up. I'll check all the lines and solenoids while I'm doing that. I just didn't know if others had a similar problem.
