07 Jeep Grand Cherokee wont shift past neutral

So my wife apparently absentmindedly shifted the car into drive before turning the car on. She says it didn't take excessive force or anything, but it was right after she got a flat and had to sit around for an hour for someone to save her, so who knows lol.

In any case the issue is that i cant shift it back into park, or keep it in reverse. If i push the shifter into reverse and hold it there it does shift into reverse and allow me to move, but it wont stay in reverse or go all the way back to park. I can start and stop the engine in neutral, shift into drive and use the 'sport' shift to change gears.

Anyone know how to fix this? I haven't tried applying too much force to the shifter for fear of breaking something.

Its a base model 07 Grand Cherokee without the 4wd and a 3.7L six cylinder.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated!

Not familiar with the WK, but since no WK guru reacts, i will give it a try. It should not have been possible to start the engine with the shifter in D, only in Park or Neutral.
Normally problems like you are describing are due to a misrigged BTSI cable (Brake/Transmission Shift Interlock). If you can remove the key without the shifter being in Park, it means that the cable needs to be rigged.
Other than that, it could be a problem with the shifter cable itself.

Re: 07 Jeep Grand Cherokee wont shift past neutral

Hey thanks for the reply! I got it sorted today... I had to take the shift module out of the console to expose some of the linkage. I'm not terribly knowledgable on this stuff, but it looks like the same mechanism that keeps you from shifting into reverse while moving forward was restricting the shifter from returning to park. I was able to snake my finger in there and move it out of the way enough to allow the shifter to return to its proper location.

Re: 07 Jeep Grand Cherokee wont shift past neutral

Any idea how it could happen or can it happen again?
