Red face 1999 grand cherokee 4.7

I have been trying to find out why I do not have front wheels working in 4HI. I have all time 4 wheel drive. I ran a scan on my vehicle and i get code 11 in abs system, as well as code 12. The reader says 1 is: G Switch malfunction, and the other is: Electronic Control unit internal malfunction. First what does this mean, and how do I fix them. And second could this be why my 4HI does not work. Also parts house said I need to replace 4WD Switch. Please anyone who can help, it will be much appreciated. I have severe health issues and depend on my vehicle not leaving me stuck in the outback!!! haha

Re: 1999 grand cherokee 4.7

As told before, the problem with the 4all time is the T-case. On the WJ no electronics involved in the 4 wheel drive system. If you have the NV247 T-case, then the problem could be low fluid, but more probably the progressive coupler inside the T-case.
As for the ABS fault codes, best would be to reset them and see if they come back. The G-sensor (depending on model year), is a separate unit under the rear seat carpet next to where the parking brake cables go through the floor( newer models have this G-switch integrated into the electronic control module, the CAB (Controller Antilock Brake)). The G-switch contains 3 mercury switches and sends deceleration signals to the CAB. Is the ABS light on the instrument cluster on as well?
And look for an other parts house, because there is no 4 WD switch on the WJ.

Re: 1999 grand cherokee 4.7

I do thank you a lot, I guess I am just confused and hoping for a quick cheap fix, and every time I get to talking with another person, they offer another suggestion. I guess I should trust the word of a jeep owner to know the truth. Thanks again I guess I'm off to find a good used transfer case... Any suggestions?????

Re: 1999 grand cherokee 4.7

Did you check the T-case fluid level first and tried fresh fluid?
The progressive coupler inside the T-case seems to be the weak link for this T-case. Tire wear on this 4x4 system should be kept equal front/rear, because different diameter between front and rear tires will cause the gerotor pump inside the progressive coupler to function and apply the clutch pack, causing it to wear rapidly and the 4 Hi function will stop working.
Knowing this, you never know from a used T-case how the state of the progressive coupler is. A new coupler seems to cost about USD 500, so is not a good option. Many people choose to swap a 242 T-case in, which gives you the option to select 4Hi. Disadvantage is that also the rear prop shaft and the internal selector must be changed.

Re: 1999 grand cherokee 4.7

Here are some 247 T-cases for sale on e-bay. They also sell the progressive coupler used for USD 150 or new with gasket/seal kit for USD 415. Ofcourse the T-case needs to be split for this, which brings extra costs with it. Jeep 247 Transfer Case | eBay
You could also look at some local junk yards, maybe you can find a low milage unit for not too much.
If you donīt care too much for the 4 Hi function, then you can just continue driving as is without problems.
