1999 jeep grand Cherokee limited tranny jerk

My grand Cherokee has a occasional jerk when it shifts gears and it is a light jerk from first to second and then it's a really hard one from second to third. Is this going to get expensive?

Re: 1999 jeep grand Cherokee limited tranny jerk

Welcome to the garage.
Difficult to tell. Did it suddenly start doing this? Harsh shifting sometimes is caused by a bad speed sensor or a bad TPS. Did you check the fluid level and colour/smell?
You could try disconnecting the battery first and see if it changed something.

Which engine/transmission? Did you check the fluid level and colour/smell?

Re: 1999 jeep grand Cherokee limited tranny jerk

It has the 5-45RFE transmission. Originally it was a 45RFE with 4 speeds, but a software change made use of an other gear ratio, creating the fifth gear. That happened in 2000 i think, but yours should have that upgrade.
Low fluid level can cause strange behaviour and the colour and smell can tell a bit about how the transmissions health is. Fresh fluid is light red in colour and has a sweet smell. The fluid can turn light brownish over a long period of time, but when its black or with a burnt smell, then something not good is going on.
Do you know when the fluid was changed? To prevent problems, you best change it at around 30.000 miles.

It smells like a shop. Like the heavy over bearing oil/grease smell

Re: 1999 jeep grand Cherokee limited tranny jerk

You never had the "check engine" light on? You could give it a try and do the keydance: ignition switch off/run three times and leave in run at the third time. Odometer will show DONE when all ok, or a fault code(s).
