Re: 2000 4.7 Jeep Grand Cherokee won't start, just will crank.

I have to retry the alternator, I think I tried starting without a fuse in, so I'll retry that. I've been testing both sides of when the fuse is removed, and I have you the two measurements for each fuse. Is this the correct way to test. I apologize in advance, I don't have much experimence testing circuits. Let me know if I'm measuring wrong.

I unhooked the alternator and no change. I did get a code of p1389 when I unhooked the alternator, went away when I hooked it back up. Where should I check from here.

Re: 2000 4.7 Jeep Grand Cherokee won't start, just will crank.

Update on progress:

I attempt to start the vehicle every morning and the same thing happens, it will fire for a second and then die. When I continue to crank it nothing. It will only fire after it sits for long periods of time, in my case over night. So this tells me for a second that we have spark and fuel, and then for whatever reason, we lose one or both of them. Could a clogged fuel filter be the issue? Maybe the fuel pump is bad even though I tested the fuel rail port? I do know when I press the fuel test port and release the pressure, fuel barely comes out, I would expect 45-50 psi to shoot it out of there pretty good. Is it a possibility that the crankshaft or camshaft sensor I replaced is bad out of the box? It's a Duralast brand and I read about mixed reviews. I do have the broken wires in the door jam, I don't think this would cause a no start issue, but how knows. I've never had this much trouble figuring a vehicle out!

Frango, thanks for all your help, I greatly appreciate it. I purchased this jeep for $400 and would love to get it running, I purchased it as a second vehicle, but now my daily driver 1998 Grand Cherokee decided the transmission/transfercase doesn't want to play anymore, so I thought the 2000 would be easier to get on the road. Please let me know where I should start looking from this point.

Swap the fuel pump relay. Do you hear the fuel pump running when ignition is switched to run (for 3 seconds only)

I did check to see if the fuel pump came on for 3 seconds, and I swapped the relay with another relay. I only listened for the pump once, and I test the rail after that.

Re: 2000 4.7 Jeep Grand Cherokee won't start, just will crank.

So you did hear the pump, but there was no pressure at the rail after this? Could be a problem with the fuel filter/pressure regulator.

Re: 2000 4.7 Jeep Grand Cherokee won't start, just will crank.

Fuel pump is definitely making noise for about three seconds. When I pressure the fuel pressure test valve on the rail their doesn't seem to be much pressure. I'm in construction, and you can definitely tell when 45-50 psi is coming out of a hose, the fuel doesn't appear to have this kind of pressure. I think I will definitely replace the fuel filter, how can I test the fuel pressure regulator?

Re: 2000 4.7 Jeep Grand Cherokee won't start, just will crank.

The filter/pressure regulator is one unit, installed just in front of the aft axle lh side. You can test it by checking the pressure when it runs (49 +- 5 psi) and see if it keeps the pressure after shutdown.

Re: 2000 4.7 Jeep Grand Cherokee won't start, just will crank.

I did some further testing and here's what I've come up with. I have confirmed that I'm getting spark, so I'm thinking it's either a fuel or computer issue, leaning more towards a fuel issue. The fuel pump does make noise so it's running, but there doesn't seem to have enough fuel pressure at the rail. I tested my dads dodge truck and the fuel comes spitting out of the rail, on the jeep it barely comes out, hardly any pressure, not sure why it was reading proper psi when I used a gauge...maybe it primes enough initially and doesn't hold. So my question to you is, if I was going to throw any parts at it, would replacing the fuel pump be a wise idea? Or what would you recommend my next steps be? Thanks,

Tony

Re: 2000 4.7 Jeep Grand Cherokee won't start, just will crank.

I would start changing the fuel filter/pressure regulator. Its cheap and easy to access. Only downside is that it can be a pita to get the quick disconnects of. Use some wd40 or alike on them a day before changing .

Re: 2000 4.7 Jeep Grand Cherokee won't start, just will crank.

I have replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter/regulator, and the Jeep still doesn't run. It will still fire initially in the morning and immediately die. Any suggestions on where to go from here. I really don't want to sell it, but I can't continue to drop money into this vehicle if there's no resolution it sight. Please let me know your thoughts.

Here's what I have done so far:

•Checked all fuses and relays, swapped them with other fuses and relays.
•Replaced both the CrankShaft Sensor, and CamShaft Sensors.
•Replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter/regulator.
•No computer codes when I turn the key (3) times. States done. Did pull a code when I unhooked the alternator. Re hooked alternator.
•Bought a spark plug and grounded it to test for spark. Spark seems consistent from what I can tell. The spark doesn't seem super strong.
•Battery extremely fast when cranking the car, maybe 15 attempts and then it has to be recharged.
•Jeep has had front end damage to the right side.
•Jeep does have the harness in the driver door that needs repaired.
•The Jeep ran for months after the accident and then just stopped.

That's all I think, please let me know what I should do from here. I've had this much trouble diagnosing a vehicle before.

Do you have the fuel now coming with pressure from the rail?
