Question 2000 Grand Cherokee v8 transmission issue

Hey I have my Grand Cherokee which had been having issues the last couple days. When I start it from Park or a stoplight it takes a few seconds to fully switch into gear. Thought it might be the fluid but I checked and it is clean, doesn't smell burnt or have a bad color.

It popped off with the following codes: P0731, P0876, and P0841. Anyone know anything about it? I'm going to go ahead and replace the transmission oil and filter tomorrow since it is due for it anyways but if I should replace a sensor or anything like that while I'm at it I appreciate the help.

Re: 2000 Grand Cherokee v8 transmission issue

Welcome to the garage.
The P0731 code shows that it is really slipping in first gear. For first gear the UD (under drive) clutch and L/R (low/reverse) clutch will be pressurized. Code P0876 and P0841 are from the pressure switches which should monitor the pressure to these clutches. So it can be that the pressure regulation solenoid in the solenoid pack is not working well, causing a too low line pressure with slipping as a result. The whole TRS/solenoid pack should be changed for that. It can also be an internal leak or a bad oil pump.
How does the transmission behave in higher gears? The UD clutch is used for 2nd and 3rd gear as well. Any slippage in those gears?
The L/R clutch is used in 1st gear and reverse. How does reverse behave?
I would try to clean first the connector on the left side of the transmission. Any moisture or dirt in there could cause problems.

Hey Frank, thanks for the info. Higher gears have been working fine we took it on the highway to get to a garage that I can work in, and it traveled just fine. I'll keep you updated on how we are doing

If you already drop the pan, you could try an air test on the LR clutch, to see if there is no internal leak. You will need to remove the valve body for that and will need an air source.

Re: 2000 Grand Cherokee v8 transmission issue

Thinking about it more, it is important to know if it slips in reverse as well. This is because the fluid flow in D 1st to the L/R clutch is different then the fluid flow in reverse to the L/R clutch. In D, the L/R shift solenoid will supply the fluid for the L/R clutch, while in reverse, its the manual valve in the valve body which supplies the fluid. So if reverse works ok, but it slips in D 1st, the problem is most probably with the shift solenoid.
If the problem exists in D 1st and reverse, an internal leak could be the cause and the air test for the L/R clutch will be needed.
