Re: 2000 WJ 4.7l Overheating

Yes, the hoses should feel rock hard with engine hot. The radiator cap has a 18 PSI pressure relief, so that the system stays pressurised. The higher pressure raises the boiling point of the coolant.
If a head is warped, it is probably loosing coolant in the oil or burning it of in a cylinder. When you don't loose any, i wouldn't be too scared about a warped head. Also a warped head could cause combustion gases in the coolant. Observe your overflow reservoir, when bubbles appear in the coolant all the time, it would be a sign of a head gasket leak and maybe warped head.

This makes me feel so much better, I haven't had any coolant loss and the reservior stays the same all the time no bubbles very clean and green.

So i guess I'll do the water pump next and see where that gets me .

I hope this is the case, but why would it only overheat under a load if it is the water pump.

Re: 2000 WJ 4.7l Overheating

Under load more heat is generated, so if the cooling capability is reduced by a bad pump or bad radiator, it will show in that case.

Water pump impeller could be starting to slip. It would be more likely to slip more at first under higher load.

The majority of these pumps have junk plastic impeller.

It's really hard to tell if your water pump is acting up by temp alone. To do that you need actual pump pressure data which we don't have with stock sensors.
