Angry 2000 WJ 4.7l Overheating

So we will start with a little of whats been done and hopefully someone can shed some light.

Temps here are around 98 degrees daily on cooler days it doesn't overheat. I drive around 50miles each way to and from work this only happens on the trip home of which the last 20 miles or so are highway and mountain hill climbs (this is where it overheats)

I mainly overheats at highway speeds 45 mph-and up or if climbing under load up hills.

The heater core was replaced mid Feb. (could they have not bled the system???)

What I've done thus far: Radiator Cap, Fan clutch (was bad helped a little), and checked fluid level seems right, Sprayed down whole front end ran water through the fins on tranny cooler, and radiator.

Both electrical and Manual fans are working at full potential to my knowledge so any help on this matter would be great.

I would start changing the thermostat, if that one doesn't open completely, it can reduce the coolant flow to the radiator. Also, if the radiator is in use for a long time, it can be that the cooling capacity gets reduced. If you would change the thermostat, it would be a good idea to flush the cooling system and radiator, to get eventual dirt out.
Eventually could be the waterpump, but i would keep that as a last option.

The T-stat was the first thought Guess I'm just trying to avoid that mess.

I do want to ask though have I damadged the engine or am I ok it hasn't gone into the red (260 degrees) it heats up to about 230 the mark right between 210 and 260.

Also What is meant by this? Are we talking long driving or the fact it's 12 years old???
Also, if the radiator is in use for a long time, it can be that the cooling capacity gets reduced

I was talking about the fact for how many years the radiator is in use already. If yours made it for 12 years, then you are a very lucky guy. Normally they fail long before that. Mine just created a leak 2 months ago, so in less then 8 years. But after many years of use, scale can have formed and partially blocked passages in the radiator, thus reducing the flow and the cooling capacity.
If the engine is still running normally and you don't loose coolant, i won't be affraid of having damaged the engine. Just be carefull though to not really overheat it, because it can warp the heads and then you will have a big repair bill to pay.

agreed, it could be a plugged radiator, also make sure the radiator is clean of debris... make sure there is no plastic bags or heavy bug splatter clogging up the face of the radiator, by the sounds of it, it seems as though the cooling system just cannot keep up with it, could be a worn impeller on the the water pump, poor operation from the thermostat, or radiator operation along with a number of other things.

I suspect your new radiator core is clogged with crud from the rest of the system.

The first thing that I always do, along with changing the thermostat, is do a good flush. I like the Prestone concentrate that you put in for a week or something like 500 miles while it dissolves all the crud. Follow directions to the letter. Then drain, put in clear water, get up to operating temperature, let cool, and repeat until the drainage is clear. Finally, fill with a 50-50 mix.

So small discovery yesterday, I went to bleed the system see if there was any air pockets and upon removing the radiator cap I noticed tiny metal shavings. The fluid is bright green and clear as can be minus the shavings.

Water pump maybe any takers???????

You mentioned that your radiator had been re-cored. Could it be from that?

A water pump usually makes noise as its bearings are on their last gasp.

I know nothing about the radiator in the car it doesn't look original, The Heater core was replaced mid feb this year.

What kind of sound should I be hearing....metal on metal if so I have a very very faint sound like this

My bad I thought you meant the radiator core.

Take the belt off and turn the pump by hand. If it feels loose or makes any noise at all then replace it. But even a worn pump will pump water so I still think the problem is a dirty or clogged radiator.

beating a dead horse I am but water pumps are crap on these wj. find one with a metal impeller vs. cheap plastic like 99% of they are..

Ok tstat has been replaced and not to much of a change, its been much cooler here lately mid 70's and it's still getting hot.

I've read some of the symptoms i'm having could be a warped head, god I hope this is'nt the problem Is there a way to tell? It's only getting hot when putting a load on it and at Highway speeds.

One thing that has me baffled is the amount of pressure on the hoses once I turn it off. I read somewhere that this could be caused by gases from a leaking head gasket getting into the cooling system.

Is it common for the hoses to have a lot of pressure????
