2002 Jeep Liberty Sport V6

Trying to do some "preventative" stuff. Bought serpentine belt and tensioner. Mechanic said bolt was "seizing up" so he quit while he was ahead and I guess I will save that for another time (but soon) moving to Evans, Ga near Augusta tomorrow. I need a no nonsense mechanic there. And I give him heads up about this, right? I will take parts back, rebuy later. I am a woman who cannot deal with car issues. I love my jeep and have driven the hell out of this bitch and I want to do right.

Welcome to the garage. No idea about a mechanic in your area, but was there something wrong with the old tensioner that it needs to be replaced? They hardly go wrong and mostly you only need to replace the pulleys, because the bearings get dry and it can seize up.

Nothing wrong with it. It was me, trying to be "extra" , and I thought someone had said to replace both. Thank God he quit.

Should I wait until belt breaks? Or just ask someone to replace belt only? I thought the tensioner had to come off to change the belt. I want to sound like I know what I am talking about when I find new mechanic, and I don't want to cause another expense. Please advise. The belt is alittle worn but not terribly.

Re: 2002 Jeep Liberty Sport V6

I would not wait until it breaks, because it will allways happen at the most inconvenient times at the most remote places. Besides the fact that the belt could cause damage and/or dangerous situations when you suddenly loose power steering (and engine cooling, which could cause overheating when the engine is not shut down soon enough).
Not familiar with the V6, but i believe that you can change the belt without much work. The mechanic just puts a wrench on the tensioner pulley bolt and rotates the tensioner against the spring pressure, whereafter the belt can be easily removed from one of the other pulleys. Use a good brand belt, like Goodyear gatorback. A strong and silently running belt.

Okay you are right. But the tensioner bolt I believe was the one that seized, which was why he couldn't change tensioner, does it just have to be turned alittle bit? And yes I will get a good belt.

I really appreciate your help.

Re: 2002 Jeep Liberty Sport V6

I attached a page (from WK manual, but the engine itself is mostly the same), where you can see the tensioner. The tensioner assy itself is mounted with one bolt to the engine, which i believe is the one which seized. You donīt have to mess with that bolt to remove the belt. You just put a wrench on the tensioner pulley and rotate against the spring force. Now the belt will loose its preload and can be taken of. The tensioner pulley must be released slowly, until it touches its stop.

Thank you! That is awesome. I am going to buy that Goodyear belt ASAP. If you hear of any mechanics in/near Augusta, GA, let me know

Re: 2002 Jeep Liberty Sport V6

Hopefully some member from the Augusta area can chime in and help you with a mechanic. Iīm from Brazil, so donīt know any mechanic overthere.
