Unhappy 2002 WJ 4.7ltr v8 black smoke

Hey all have a 2002 wj 4.7ltr v8 dumping black smoke out of the exhaust?? The oil was overfilled but has been recorrected now. I thought maybe just oil blow by, but it's still smoking/running very rich. I've cleaned pcv/ all o2 sensors apart from the pre cat as I ran out of time. Ran throttle body cleaner, checked all plugs. But it's still smoking and throwing an engine light. No loss of power and no misfires

Black exhaust smoke means the engine is burning too much fuel.

Best way to start is to figure out what code it's throwing!

Yea I know I just can't work out why, don't have a diagnostic reader, but will it show codes on the dash by turning the ignition on and off 3 times in 5seconds?. I also think the lady who owns it may have killed the cats as it has been blowing smoke for awhile now apparently..

Im runnimg catless. No smoke. Sounds like the o2 sensors or a map/iat could be bad. I know you said you cleaned them but that wont help if its gone ya know?

Start small and work to less common issues like a stuck fuel injector or maybe as a worse case scenario, the pcm

Yea true ill try post a video of it, and can the map be cleaned or does that just have to be replaced if faulty. And what is the pcm?

Video below. Pulled the plugs, none were that bad, so don't think any of the injectors have failed. Also things to note the oil consumption is not bad, and it doesn't drink too much fuel

Replace the map. Pcm is the powertrain control module. It runs the engine among a few other things (depending on vehicle)

Yes, the keydance should show you the faults, or Done when all ok.
I would suspect the O2 sensors to be fouled. Would be.nice to see the O2 sensor volts and fuel trims.

Re: 2002 WJ 4.7ltr v8 black smoke

I'll try get the codes on tuesday when I next see the car and clean the pre-cat sensor and see if that helps, won't replace the map until we see the codes I suppose, and would I have to hook up a diagnostics to see the volts for the o2 sensors, I'm guessing yes? So you can see what it's doing before and after the cats. And did the video work??

Re: 2002 WJ 4.7ltr v8 black smoke

Yes, you will need a scanner which can show live data, or an android phone with the free "Torque" app and a bleutooth or wifi dongle.
Besides the O2 sensors (1-1 and 2-1 as the bank 1 and bank 2 pre-cat sensors and the 1-2 and 2-2 as the bank 1 and bank 2 after-cat sensors), you can also monitor the MAP and see if its out of specs. You will need to know the atmosferic pressure for the day and place the jeep is and can compare it with the MAP with engine off. As soon as you start the engine, the MAP will go down due to the suction in the inlet.
