2005 3.7L Rotational Noise Under Acceleration

Just purchased a 2005 Grand Cherokee Laredo with 66k miles and am noticing a rotational, rythmic "whir' noise under acceleration. Thought it might be tire harmonics, but it fades and stops when coasting or after letting off the gas...I'm thinking some kind of drivetrain thing? Like somewhere between transmission and rear axle? any ideas would be much appreciated!

Re: 2005 3.7L Rotational Noise Under Acceleration

sounds like a rear diff bearing concern.

Re: 2005 3.7L Rotational Noise Under Acceleration

thanks for the response...yeah that would seem to make sense to me...I'm reading all these horror stories of quotes for replacing rear diff parts...should I be able to get away with just having someone replace the bearing and nothing else? There's no grinding or clanking noises, drives and shifts fine, just makes a noticeable (annoying) light "wa-wa-wa-wa" under accel....I'm somewhat car savvy but don't think I have the time or right tools to do it myself...just don't want to get taken on something that seems simple...thanks again

Re: 2005 3.7L Rotational Noise Under Acceleration

what do your tires look like? wa wa wa can be a common tire sound... as for rear end noise, a wa wa wa from the diff would be like ring gear runout and may require a new carrier assembly or ring and pinion. typically if its ONLY bearings it will be a consistant growl, or hum, sometimes affected by load (accelerating or coasting) but the wa wa wa is an indication that your gear tooth contact is moving around.

Re: 2005 3.7L Rotational Noise Under Acceleration

ok yeah that might explain why its there under acceleration, and not constant...this is why I didn't think it would be tires, though that was my first instinct...they would make the noise despite accel or decel right? Its the worst around 15-30 mph then is less audible around 50mph, probably because the rotation is faster and becomes more constant. So if its a gear tooth contact issue it would go away under coast because its not trying to engage at that moment, but under load it does? thanks, i appreciate the help

Re: 2005 3.7L Rotational Noise Under Acceleration

Hi Mitchrider,

I know this post is a few years old but I have recently purchased the exact same jeep and have similar noise. Mine is kind of a higher pitch whine vs a wa-wa-wa but only happen on acceleration. I take my foot off the gas the noise disappears. Did you ever pinpoint exactly what this was ?

Curious before I start poking around from scratch myself.

Thank you.
