Angry 2005 Grand Jeep Cherokee

My 4.7L 2005 Grand Jeep Cherokee just recently over heated and the starter went out at the same time. I have replaced the starter and it now starts but has a rough idle, check engine light is on, when driving very sluggish and if it hits 2500 rpm the Jeep starts to Jerk. I have done everything to check for a blown head gasket except compression test, all seems fine. Spark plugs do need to be changed and oil needs to be changed, anything else I need to check and what is going on with the motor? PLEASE HELP!!

Re: 2005 Grand Jeep Cherokee

The 4.7 is quite picky on overheating. It often results in warped heads and/or dropped valve seats.
Did you check if any fault code was set, which could help in the trouble shooting?

No I haven't been able to check the codes, I don't have one of those. I have been racking my brain on how I could get a hold of one!

Re: 2005 Grand Jeep Cherokee

See if the key dance works: ignition switch off/run three times and leave in run at the third time. The odometer should show DONE when all ok or a fault code(s).

Re: 2005 Grand Jeep Cherokee

No start, just the position where the instrument lights light up.

Tried the key dance and it doesn't work. I did how ever give her all new spark plugs and changed the oil, now she seems to be running great except for when I stop and put in reeves it stalls and when down shifting (automatic) feels like the transmission jumps. Compression test was great as well, so could it be the throttle body switch or some else that regulates the fuel and transmission?

Re: 2005 Grand Jeep Cherokee

The throttle position sensor is a very common failure on the 4.7l engine. I dont completely follow your update, its not very clear exactly what you mean, but the TPS can cause a stall concern and it can cause shifting concerns.

Also, with a head gasket concern, you will rarely, if ever see anything obvious with a compression test. your best bet would be a block test, OR a leakdown test. If your head gasket is bad and you add pressure to each cylinder, the one leaking into the cooling system will cause bubble to show in your filler neck.

Hopefully your story ends much different then mine did ( new throttle body, pcm flashed, new gas pedal , and finally new pcm to fix my issue) if your check engine is on the key dance should produce some codes for you. If you think it's an intermittent issue try disconnecting the battery 30 min or longer if possible and clear the codes see if it happens again. But first I would check your fluid levels just to be safe I have read same issues with rpm surging coming to a stop that was solved with filling the transmission fluid to the proper level. Any other symptoms? And if your not sure about the key dance and how to do it just YouTube it. I couldn't get it the first couple times I tried it either.
