2006 cherokee erratic coolant issue.

my 2006 cherokee baterry light came on for 1 day and then shut off next day but then is at the mark right before overheating. said check gages and coolant was empty. filled it up but it seems to be disappearing. baterry light doesnt come on again and not seeing any leaks. I am confused. any ideas?I have about 82,000 miles on her.

Re: 2006 cherokee erratic coolant issue.

its hard to say, there are many places the coolant could be leaking but without seeing its impossible to say exactly where its going. There are common failures on the 3.7,4.7 and 5.7l engines, so Im not going to waste time speculating for each till we know... as such...

what motor do you have?

4.7 v 8. The overheating is erratic and can change quickly from the norm to overheating and vice versa. I drove for half hour today and then 10 min an hour later and I still have antifreeze this time as well as no issues. I also didnt get that overheating smell when driving that I had yesterday. The battery or check gages alerts did not appear either. Yesterday I filled the coolant area with water to at least get home and it was still full before I went to bed but when I woke up this morning it was empty.....I then refilled it with the proper antifreeze.

Re: 2006 cherokee erratic coolant issue.

That the overflow reservoir is full of coolant, doesn't mean that the cooling system and/or radiator are full as well. When you have overheating problems, you better check if the radiator is full first (on cold engine, because on hot engine the system is suppost to be pressurized).
No signs of coolant on the ground?
No strange smell and/or white smoke from the exhaust?

Re: 2006 cherokee erratic coolant issue.

There is a couple problems here... The 4.7 will blow head gaskets if you look at them wrong, and the fact yours has been overheated numerous times I would lean towards that being a problem. From there you have to figure out what came first, the failed head gasket or another leak that lead to an overheat that blew the head gaskets.

When you refilled the cooling system after the first overheat did you remove the cooling system bleed screw near the upper radiator hose on the motor? If you did not you have a lot of air in your cooling system and even more likely that there is a blown head gasket or warped head because air in the cooling system will cause hot spots.

Because you took it to a transmission shop for a motor problem. There can be air in the cooling system and the radiator is "full".

Nice that they told you that you need a new transmission, but did they also tell you why? Did they do tests to come to this conclusion?
The moment the overheating occured, where you driving or standing still?
Just as a quick check, is the transmission fluid at the proper level, light red in color and not with a burned smell?
What could have happened for example is that the transmission cooler in the radiator is leaking and that coolant went into the transmission. (i wonder though which pressure will be higher, from the cooling system or from the transmission) But not sure if the 2006 Cherokee has the transmission cooler in the radiator.

Re: 2006 cherokee erratic coolant issue.

Ok, just saw your reply about the confusion with an other vehicle.
When you follow the upper radiator hose from the radiator to the engine, where it connects to the engine, you will find an allen screw, which is the bleed screw. With cold engine remove this screw and fill the radiator until it overflows from the bleed port. Now you can re-install the allen screw and fill the radiator to the top and test the engine.
