2014 Grand Cherokee Diesel Check Engine Light

My Check Engine Light (MIL) just came on. We have 5,160 miles on the jeep. Have always bought name brand (USA and Safeway) diesel and nothing seems to be amiss - except the MIL. (mileage has not dropped, voltage and temps are all OK, oil is full, etc.) The only thing that has changed is that my oil change alert has come on - but not at the same time as the MIL.

The Jeep is a 2014 Grand Cherokee, EcoDiesel.

According to the manual, the MIL can sometimes just come on. They suggest waiting for 'several of your typical driving cycles' before having the jeep serviced.

I have already scheduled a service for day after tomorrow - but this seems a bit odd.

Any ideas why the MIL came on?

I had 600 miles on mine when it first came on. I've had it into the dealer three times now for this issue. I'm quite annoyed at this point.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Diesel Check Engine Light

On my way to the dealer, I got another messgae ... something about the Exhaust filter getting full. Turns out I need to run the Jeep on the highway for at least 1/2 an hour - over 50 MPH - at least once per month. The dealership claims the MIL came on because of the exhaust filter issue. Who knew I needed to get on the highway and 'put the pedal to the metal' for a while.

We shall see if it stays off.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Diesel Check Engine Light

Question

The only modification I've done is muffler removal.

Would this cause check engine light?

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Diesel Check Engine Light

Recently at about 25k miles the MIL light came on in my 2014 GC Ecodiesel after heavy rains. The fuel cover has not fit properly since first day of purchase and despite promise to fix it at the initial service interval. I have a video of simulated rainfall getting into the fuel filler compartment even when cover is closed. After following manual instructions to proceed with several driving cycles the MIL remained on. Dealer discovered there was (1) bad wiring to in rear quarter-panel to the DEF injector - claimed routed improperly at manufacture. Possibly related - I had dealer-installed skid plates done 6 mos. earlier; (2) defective DEF injector. The dealer said no replacement DEF injectors are available at this time and it is on back order. Dealer states Jeep cannot provide him any info as to when the DEF injector will be available. My 2014 GC Ecodiesel has officially been listed in "OTR" status (off the road) for 10 days and no date id known when the DEF injector will be available. I used only Mopar DEF purchased at the dealership.
Anyone else aware of problems with wiring and/or leaking fuel door covers and/or DEF injector problems?

What was the error code? A lot of us are getting the P20EE. A lot of us are waiting for a DEF injector replacement. I retrieved my vehicle from the dealer why they wait for the DEF injector.

The DEF injector is a very fragile part hanging on the side of the exhaust with hoses dangling underneath the frame. An awful design and implementation. Snow, mud, water, brush, or a butterfly in China can break it. Not that I am cynical......

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Diesel Check Engine Light

I do not know how to obtain error codes and assume this obtained from the onboard diagnostics. Dealer did not tell me the code.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Diesel Check Engine Light

I have long trips (two over 10k miles) planned the next 12 months. Exhaust had very bad odor. Dealer advised that I not drive the car.

If you have a smart phone or tablet, you can get an OBDII device that can read and reset error codes. An ELM327 device is about $16. I use the Torque App. It has been very useful.
