2014 Jeep Cherokee cranking too long to start

I have a brand new Jeep Cherokee that sometimes takes too long to start (cranks for 5-10 seconds) and sometimes does not start. When his happens the second time i try to start the car it starts right up. I took it to the dealership and they said they could not find anything. Any clue?

We could use a little more information. Which engine? Which 4X4 system? Push button start? Has this happened since new? What type of gas and is this the gas you always used? etc?

Re: 2014 Jeep Cherokee cranking too long to start

It started to happen after a few months of use. It is a 2014 Jeep Cherokee Limited. 3.2 liter V6. I use Shell Plus gasoline (mid grade 89 Octanes). Battery voltage looks ok at 14v. I actually have a video with the problem but cannot post here

You can edit your member info to add the info on your vehicle, so people don't have to keep prodding you for it or search thru a chain of posts. Handy.

When you say it cranks too long, does it crank at what seems to be full speed?

When it cranks, do you hear it firing at all? Or does it just crank with no change in sound?

Is there anything in particularly you note when it decides to act up?
- After a hard drive
- After a very short drive where it can't warm up
- hot days
- cold days
- humid days
- holidays :-)

Are you seeing any check engine lights or messages at all?

Is there an Autozone near you where you could borrow a scan tool to pull any trouble codes? [We'd like to assume your dealer checked fault codes, but dealers vary widely in their willingness to help]

Can you try a different brand of gas for a tankful or two and see if that affects it?

Unless you have a very special model, you have a 3.6 L V-6, and it does not require midgrade, it is rated for regular--which you might want to try, but go to a different brand.

Anything you notice happening before/after it decides to act up can help the service folks, as otherwise about all they can do is try to duplicate it, pull fault codes, etc.

Re: 2014 Jeep Cherokee cranking too long to start

I have pretty much the same vehicle, Limited ADII 3.2L. I have always used 87 regular as it is the cheapest and gets me good gas mileage. I had mine custom built and it will be a year old next month. Can't say I have ever had a starting problem. Just tap the button and she starts right up. The reason I asked about the gas is I am wondering if you got a bad tank of gas? I pretty much buy my gas at the same station. I know it has a rapid turn over of its tanks because it is the cheapest in town. The gas doesn't sit in the tanks long enough to get water in it. Just for laughs you might want to try a bottle of gas dryer and see if that helps any. Also, just out of curiosity you might try starting your Jeep from your key fob or cell phone and see what happens. Let us know if you come up with the solution. Good Luck.

Thanks for the help! I actually used to use low grade (87) gas. And once i start having issues to start the car i changed to mid grade. When i say it cranks for a long time i mean anywhere from 5-10 seconds. Same sound. Engine does not fire. However it fires right away on a second try. I got a low battery message a couple of times after the long cranks. But battery looks fine. Didn't really do anything special other than i travelled for 2 weeks and the problem started after that (the car was not driven for 2 weeks). Then it stopped for a month or so. And the problem resumed. I will try to post the video i recorded on youtube and send you guys the link

He has a Cherokee, not a Grand Cherokee. The 6 cylinder in the Grand Cherokee is the 3.6L the 6 cylinder in the Cherokee is the 3.2L.

Two things concern me. The Low Battery Message is not normal and the traveling for two weeks. Who knows what kind or condition of gas you picked up during your trip?

Perhaps I misread your post and the vehicle sat for two weeks in which case the battery and gas concern me even more.

Re: 2014 Jeep Cherokee cranking too long to start

No fire would mean it either isn't getting spark or fuel.
Unfortunately, not that easy to tell the difference any more, particularly if it tends to always start on the second attempt. Well, you could stick your hand on a spark plug but I wouldn't recommend it--unless your brother in law volunteers.

Is there anything about length of setting off that seems to trigger the no start?
As in overnight, cold, etc. as if you can narrow that down, you would want to make sure your mechanic knows that it works just fine until left hours... or that it tends to come and go. The more you can give them the more likely you are to get help.

I'd still recommend seeing if it is storing fault codes--have you asked your dealer yet?

Don't be afraid or bashful about taking it back again and again, but anything you can do to narrow it down will help.
