2014 Jeep GC V6 Limited - High Pitch "Whining" Noise From Engine Compartment

My Grand Cherokee has this high pitch noise coming from the engine compartment. It sounds like it could be the power steering or alternator, or something on the belt system.

The pitch of the noise will change when I turn the steering wheel. This is what makes me think it is the power steering.

Be hearing this noise since I bought the GC with 11 miles on it. Though it would go away as I broke in the GC but I now have 1,000 miles on it and it has not gone away.

I have read other posts that mention this issue and they say that the noise is coming from an electric motor that is part of the power steering.

I attached a video of the noise.

Will be taking it to get serviced at the dealer soon but was wondering if anyone has experienced this, had their GC serviced and had this fixed.

Thanks.

I brought my Jeep to get serviced. They said the sound was normal.

At the dealer I started up two new 2014 V6 GC. They also made the sound. The power steering uses a power assisted electric motor. The motor is making that sound. It's normal.

Not the power steering.
Belt tensioner/pulley issue.
Not detrimental to the vehicle.
Chrysler is working on a fix.

Re: 2014 Jeep GC V6 Limited - High Pitch "Whining" Noise From Engine Compartment

from online database:

Case Number: S1409000004
Release Date: 02/05/2014
Symptom/Vehicle Issue: Howl/Whine Noise From Engine Compartment In Cold Ambient Temperatures
Discussion:
The customer may complain of very loud howl/whine noise after the first cold start of the day .This noise is typically heard with ambient temperatures of 30 deg. F and lower. The colder the ambient temperature the longer the noise will last and is usually in the 5-30 sec. range. The noise is not detrimental to the life of the Engine. The issue is with the FEAD tensioner and or idler pulley bearing. Engineering is aware of the issue and is currently investigating root cause. Currently there is no repair and no repair attempt should be made.

Re: 2014 Jeep GC V6 Limited - High Pitch "Whining" Noise From Engine Compartment

Few weeks ago my GC has also started whining noise which I can hear inside, it changes when I turn steering wheel. It is here on both cold and warm engine. I took it to service but they are telling that actually noise is coming from fuel pump and it is changing by turning steering wheel because electrical load is changing. They are trying to convince factory to replace fule pump under warranty, let's see.

Any updates? Is it fixed? My GC has the identical problem from the day one ... The whining sound changes tunes when steering.

Did more research online. Found another case, very similar as you mentioned, that the sound is caused by the pump. I am quoting the source here "From day one I could hear a high pitched whistling type of sound. The dealer investigated and found that the sound was coming from the power steering pump. " However, the owner did not get the pump replaced, cause the dealer thought it is normal...

Re: 2014 Jeep GC V6 Limited - High Pitch "Whining" Noise From Engine Compartment

I have had the exact same issue with my 2014 JGC Overland V6 - 6700 miles. Passengers in my Jeep have asked what the sound was. The whining high-pitched noise 'is' coming from the electric power steering pump. I am now on my 3rd pump...and they all make that noise. Cold or warm or hot, the noise is there. It gets drowned out by the engine noise above 20MPH. It seems better when the pump is new; but, after a couple of weeks, the sound resurfaces. I'm in the shop again - at a different dealership - now I've been without my Jeep for 3.5 weeks. New dealership says it's a normal electric motor sound. Really? So, I guess I have to live with it; or, take a $4000-$5000 hit by getting out of my lease.

I wrapped a towel around the pump to verify that it's the power steering pump and it lessened the sound a bit; but, I'm afraid of overheating the pump so I took it off. So...maybe I have to do what the dealership told me...turn up the radio. Whatever. Seems like a $50K vehicle shouldn't have such an annoying sound. I'm done with Jeep.

Re: 2014 Jeep GC V6 Limited - High Pitch "Whining" Noise From Engine Compartment

Anyone know of a fix for this? I've got a 2014 Grand Cherokee diesel and have a solid whine from the power steering. Really hoping Jeep gets behind this (or already has).
