5.7 L with smoking issues at start up

An update for all owners with the 5.7 L engines that had concerns of blue smoke coming from their exhausts upon initial startup after overnight parking--
Chrysler now has a TSB to cover the issue -- TSB 09-002-13 that allows for a revised engine oil pan to be installed part # 68207352AA
I had this issue with my Jeep that only had 22000 KMS and complained to the dealer for a long time with loads of videos to document my concerns but were told it was the "synthetic oil "I was using was too thin to "normal condition"
I hope this information helps others whom had the same issues and were being told the condition was normal.

Now you just need to deal with the dipstick issue common to implementing that TSB.

I wasn't told it was normal, I was told not to park the thing on a good rearward slant and leave the engine idling for almost an hour next time. Oddly enough, that worked.

Wonder how it handles a stiff uphill with what appears to be weak windage/oil control for a true 4wd.

Did you have the new pan installed on yours? and what did you do for the dipstick issue?
I am taking mine in today for the install but asked the dealer to put in exactly the 7 qts and I will mark the existing dipstick for future references.
After receiving the BS answers from the dealer that the smoking was normal, synthetic oil is too thin for the 5.7 l and I should go back to regular oil, I installed a BT catch can which completely eliminated the smoking.
The can does help catch excess blow by which was evidence when I checked the can after 2500 kms,there were at least 3 to 4 ounces of oil in the can.
The oil starvation on a steep uphill climb is now another BS headache to deal with.

Naw, am sticking with the stock pan and I'm one of those that adds about 1/3 quart after an oil change, since they insist on stopping at 7. 0

I was on a steep driveway training two separate garage doors and left it
running in June hot day while I had to remove a cover from one of the openers to train it. Not too bright on a new vehicle. Next morning it let out a pretty impressive smoke signal, then settled down.

I will probably pick up a Billet or Mopar/Billet can and install it some day rather than messing with the oil pan.

The TSB mentions both a reflash of the PCM and the deeper pan, I'll ask my service manager next time over there if I could get just the flash and donate the deeper pan to someone for their Thanksgivukkah turkey roast--or have them keep it for someone who wants it.

Got the Jeep back on Friday ,it was a full day job.
They claimed they had to move front axles away to get at oil pan bolts and other time make up BS.
Anyway, the new pan seems not much different that the old one, just the modified windage tray so I guess the old dipstick will be OK.
They put 7 qts in per instructions ( I am hoping ) and the original dipstick still reads correctly.
I guess if you still want to do it,you will only have to part with your rig for the day knowing your oil pan is modified to correct the start up smoking isue
On the other hand ,I can't really tell if the revised pan is working because the catch can I had previously installed had corrected my smoking issue.
Since you prefer not to do your pan,the 30 minute catch can vs 7 hour oil pan install install should correct the smoking.
The only drawback is the $159.00 you have to dish out for the catch can purchase.

My trailhawk 5.7 has this smoking issue at startup. The dealer did the TSB but the prob still exists and I had to bring the jeep back in. What do you think they'll do next to correct? I hope not a valve job. What do you mean "dipstick" issue? With the new oil pan, does the dip stick not read correctly? Thanks for the advice

Don't worry about the dipstick issue, the factory stick does read correctly.
I thought the new pan would be deeper, hence the factory dipstick would be too short and not read correctly. However, the updated pan has the same configuration as the original one,except a different windage tray to keep the oil in place when parked on a slope.
if you already had the pan done and still have smoking issue, you may have valve or ring issues.
Is your rig still under warranty?
One big thing I need to mention FWIW. Several months before the TSB came out ,and being extremely frustrated with the dealer's response to the issue, I had installed a Billet Technologies catch can.
The catch can did eliminate my smoking issues right after the installation.
I am not sure if you are willing to spend the $159.00 to see if the catch can will work for you or go back in to the dealer to check and see if you do have bad valves or rings.

The dealer guys are still combing through things and trying to find the issue. The Trailhawk is a. 2013 and I only have 6k miles... Still under warranty. Thanks for the info and I'll let u know what they find.

Bonus !! you still have tons of warranty .If there is underlying issues with the engine ( valve , rings or head gasket) there is enough time for them to surface and still be covered under your warranty.
I found that the blow - by through the PCV valve was sufficient enough to pool after shutdown,and pow, when you start up in the morning -- a big puff of smoke from the blow by burning off.
Since you still have tons of warranty, insist of the dealer being thorough to check the engine valve , rings or head gasket for leaks.
Normally, they would brush you off saying it is normal. Smoking on a new motor is not normal!
Keeping in mind you had the TSB performed and still smoke.
I was lucky the catch can solved my issue.
I am still keeping a keen eye for valve, rings or head gasket issues since the catch can may only be a band aid solution to a major problem.
I have extended warranty, so if there is a problem,it should show up before 60000 miles.

I think the basic powertrain warranty is 5 years, 100,000 miles.

They are going through the cylinder heads, valves, etc. sounds like a big job for me. I don't know if the parts were defective or what but the valve guides and stems will prob be replaced this week
