Brake light issue

so I have a 2000 grand Cherokee and just started having a weird issue with my brake and running lights. I had friend tell me my drivers side brake light was out. So thinking it was just the bulb I replaced it and replaced the passenger side as well. When I reinstalled I had running lights but still no brake light on the drivers side. My socket was pretty over heated so I replaced it as well with a new one. Once I did that I managed to pop a fuse as I had no running it brake lights. Fixed that but still had no drivers side brake light. I have checked the fuses again and the bulb both where good so I shut the car off and came back later to go so.e where and my running(tail) lights are really dim and my third brake light is on all the time when I push on the brake pedal the third brake light gets brighter but my brake tail light assembly goes out. Any thoughts on a fix or check would be greatly appreciated. I have not dug into it with a multi meter yet as the problem has me vexed.

Re: Brake light issue

It's a problem those models are plagued with im afraid.. I own a 2004 with the same exact issues and the problem was a break in a ground somewhere.. It still reoccurs now and then around every 4 months.. I had issues with my dome lights staying on very dim and as we speak my driverside window loses complete function when I open the door.. I changed the the computer for the jeep and it helped with only the dome lights.. Wish you luck with it.. Still till this day I haven't found a complete remedy just band aids.. Would like to follow just to see if you bump into anything different that I can try.. Good luck

Re: Brake light issue

Problems with the brake lights on the WJ are quite common. Most of the time the problem is the small copper coloured tabs from the light sockets. You normally have to bend them out a bit to restore the contact. You changed one socket already. I would try and bend the opposite side on the light assy a bit out, that helped on my jeep at least. Be sure that all the sockets are turned until the stops, otherwise you could loose contact or maybe even make a short.

For your problem you could first disconnect the battery for some minutes and try again. The BCM can lock out for whatever reason and the battery disconnect unlocks it.
If it returns, then you most probably have a broken wire inside the drivers door boot. The thick gauge wires are in fact too stiff and will break after many times flexing when opening/closing the door.
