Hey guys! First off, I'm new here, so be gentle . I'm purchasing a 1989 Cherokee Laredo. It's almost perfect and has ALWAYS been my dream Jeep. Went to go look at it the other evening and we found just a few minor issues.

The first is a tea pot, like really high pitched noise coming from the front of the engine/bay. We're thinking vacuum leak or idler pulley? The other, more concerning issue is a minor leak from the tcase. Could this be a major problem or something that's easily fixed? Does anyone have any experience with these issues? There's a whole slew of repairs that have already been made, including water pump. I don't have the whole list with me. Any help would be so awesome!

The tcase leak is likely just a bad front or rear seal, not too difficult to replace with a bit of time and some basic tools.

The whistling is hard to say without being there to hear it in person though. You can get a cheap mechanics stethoscope at Harbor Freight that ready helps isolate noises like that, just be careful using it around moving parts.

But you should be able to find lots of XJs at the junkyard if you ever need parts!

Welcome and good luck on your prospective new Jeep!

Re: Buying an XJ/Minor Problems

Thank you! I was super lucky to find this one. Most Jeeps in my price range had well over 200k on them, while this has 170k. I'm in love with it! My first jeep was a 5.9 Grand Cherokee and I loved it, but ultimately had a million problems, including an issue with the VC. So I'm trying to avoid that here. I will look further into the noise. It's quite annoying, but doesn't appear all of the time, just sometimes. Thanks for the help!

At 170k, that thing is just starting to be broken in!
