Charging System

Battery light came on today on my 2012 Grand Cherokee Laredo, 3.6L. I stopped at Auto zone and they put it on the machine, results came back as the alternator bad, not producing voltage.

Truck has 49,000 on it, has anybody else experience this?

I'm finding out the rebuilt alternators are not in stock in the local parts store but available online through the stores, very expensive, in the $350 range plus tax. New at the dealer is $505.

Going to go by another place and have them put it on the machine, if it come back as the alternator I guess it would be confirmed. I'm not sure if the system has relays or fuses that may be bad causing the alternator to not put out. Again, any thoughts would be great.

First go to retailmenot.com and get a good coupon code first for Advance Auto, you can save as much as 40% if you order online with a code.
Or rockauto.com is great, but their shipping can be a little high. Not sure if they carry alternators though, but it's worth a shot.
Next best option would be a junkyard!
You may also be able to find someone locally who can rebuild it.

Re: Charging System

Thanks for the info on the promo code! I put a search out to junkyard up and down the coast, one came back with $200 plus shipping.

Re: Charging System

An alternator which doesn´t produce any voltage , can have a bad diode bridge (mounted on the alternator and can be replaced separately), or a bad voltage regulator. Don´t know where the voltage regulator is mounted on your jeep, on mine for example its inside the PCM.
If the alternator was tested out of the jeep, i would discard the voltage regulator. The brushes can wear down as well, but with the milage you have i would not expect that.

Re: Charging System

Thanks Frango100.
Got it checked again and the same results. The alternator is to hot to touch even seconds after starting it, and is making a whining sound when driving. I believe the replaceable parts you mention are all now internally mounted within the unit, the good ole days are gone!

Thanks again

I wonder if the bearings are going bad on it.

Re: Charging System

I'm thinking the same time with the whining noise coming from it.
