Check Engine Dash Light - 2008 GC CRD

Hi everyone

This is my first post and I haven't had a chance to scan through everything to see if this has already been addressed.

My mechanic put the OBD 2 and the scan came up with a glow plug issue. He recommended replacing ALL 6 glow plugs and the module at a cost of approx. 850 + taxes - nearly 1000 dollars. I have 92000KM on the truck (approx. 57000 miles). It functions perfectly well, no problem starting, fuel mileage actually may be up a little over last year.

Sounds a little absurd to me to me spend 1000 dollars for a faulty glow plug issue. I would get a second opinion from the dealer, but I have a hate on for their $130 'diagnostic' fee (aka known as 5 minutes to throw the computer on) + $120 to change the glow plug. I have no problem for the $120 parts and labour for the plug...

So the question is: Has anyone experienced this problem and how have you handled it?

I will post this in the diesel section also.

Unfortunately I didn't get it. He is usually pretty trustworthy and when he said it was a glow plug indicator I figured it was an easy fix so i didn't ask for it.

Re: Check Engine Dash Light - 2008 GC CRD

try this..........

Retrieving codes (2005-2010 Grand Cherokee):

Insert and turn the ignition key from "Off" to "On" three times, moderately fast and without pausing ("ON" is when the digital odometer displays):
Tip: use the "count to 5" method, where "1" is the first "On":
Off > On > Off > On > Off > On
0 1 2 3 4 5
0 - Insert key (Off)
1 - On
2 - Off
3 - On
4 - Off
5 - On At the third "On" the odometer display will read "DTC REPORT" and list the codes. If no codes are present the message "Done" will appear.

Re: Check Engine Dash Light - 2008 GC CRD

Glow plug problems are common the the 3.0l along with driver failure, sounds like you have a tech covering his butt... the driver circuits are really quite easy to test with a test light and a witech to actuate the glow plugs. Who knows what the codes were, but I will say glow plug function is going to be quite important in canada coming up to winter

Re: Check Engine Dash Light - 2008 GC CRD

after it says dtc report it should give you a P XXXX in that box, if there are no codes I beleive it says done... you want the P XXXX

Re: Check Engine Dash Light - 2008 GC CRD

the code should indicate which glow plug has failed (if it was just 1). often you can replace a single glow plug yourself for $50 part in your driveway, however, it is common for a failure of 1 to indicate they are all about to start going.

Unfortunately it goes from that message back to temperature - no P XXXX. Anyone else had this happen?
