"Check gauges" light => low oil pressure

I got this "check gauges" light on '02 Grand Cherokke Laredo with 115,000 miles. The oil pressure gauge is erratic. Goes from middle to low and may move back up. From what I remember, the pressure is normally on the high side. Seems pretty obvious that there's a problem with oil pump but can anybody tell me if I should be looking at something else? Oil level is good and the "engine light" is off. Replacing oil pump seems an expensive job when I look in repair manual so I'd like to make sure that's what it is before I take it to the dealer. Thanks

Re: "Check gauges" light => low oil pressure

The oil pressure sending unit is well known to fail over time.
Do you hear any mechanical noise, which could point towards low oil pressure?
Which engine do you have, the 4.0 can have problems with crankshaft bearings, which could cause a real low pressure.
So if possible you could start measuring the oil pressure, to know where to start with.

Thanks Frango. I bought an oil sending unit yesterday and will install it today. $54 at Autozone including tax. The old one looks like it's cracked. The engine is a 4.7 L V8.
