Cherokee Renegade auto transmision issues.

Hi all. I bought a 2006 Cherokee about 3 months back and the auto transmision seems to be overheating and occasionally causing the engine to go into lymph mode as a result of the error received from trans and only on long trips(+-150km). The Jeep has done about 280000km so not expecting perfection but im hoping someone can give me some advice on what might cause that before some serious damage occurs. I checked the oil level and thats fine. Thanks alot

Re: Cherokee Renegade auto transmision issues.

Welcome to the garage.
Does your jeep have the 5 speed 5-45RFE transmission? Do you get the transmission overtemp warning on?
Did you check for any fault codes set?
A transmission overheat can be caused by a not properly working transmission cooling system, or slipping clutches or not well working torque converter clutch.
The fluid level is ok, but how is the color and smell?

Re: Cherokee Renegade auto transmision issues.

Hi Frango, thanks for the reply. I dont know how to be sure but from what i read on the net about spec model that seems to be the trans model number yes. The oil color is what i would call fresh engine oil color and i would not know what it supposed to smel like. What might be useful info is that the clutch does not operate normal for couple of seconds at cold startup, i need to let engine idle for about 20-30 sec then only wil the car start roling when i release the brake with drive or rev selected.

Re: Cherokee Renegade auto transmision issues.

Fresh ATF+4 fluid is light red in color, but it can become lightly brown over time. Fresh fluid has more or less a sweet smell to it, but when it smells burnt, then it is not a good sign.
The late transmission engagement after startup is most probably caused by a leaking checkvalve in the spin-on return filter. After standing still for some hours, the fluid can return partly from the torque converter to the transmission pan and it will take some time to fill the torque converter up again. Without fluid the torque converter can not transfer any torque.
Did you check if there is any fault code set? If you donīt have a scanner, try the key dance: ignition switch off/run three times and leave in run at the third time. The odometer will show DONE when no faults, or any fault code. Is the check engine light on?

Re: Cherokee Renegade auto transmision issues.

Hi Frango. I tried the key dance with no results but yes the "check engine" light does come on from time to time for about 3 days or so then goes away. I also smelled the oil and i do get a indication of some burn there. The cluthces bother me cos when engine cold it shifts to quick in my opinion and when hot takes a while to change to 3rd specifically

Re: Cherokee Renegade auto transmision issues.

Ok, you will have to put a scanner on it to read the fault code(s).
Only with the code(s) we will be able to know more what is going on. With the amount of Kms it would not be a surprise if a clutch pack is worn to limits, but the code(s) will tell more.

Re: Cherokee Renegade auto transmision issues.

I did the rebuild of my 5-45RFE myself and i bought the master rebuild kit from Mopar for around USD 300 i believe. I bought it via Amazon.com. It is wise to also change the torque converter after so many Kms, because the torque converter clutch lining will most probably be close to the wear limits as well. The Mopar master kit comes with all the clutches and steels, all the seals and both filters. You will also need 13 qts of ATF +4 fluid.
But lets first see what the codes tell, maybe its not that bad.
