code definitions

I was hopeing someone could tell me how to fix the heating promblem in my 02 overland. i pulled the code 52 and 56 from the digital display on heater a/c control .The blend doors have been replaced and resonator as well. after i turn the jeep off it takes a few minutes but there is a creeping door sound coming from the glove box area. I followed the procedure to reset the system but still makes that noise. i have no heat on drvers side and the air flow seems to be the same in any fan speed setting. i can hear the speed increase and decrease when adjust the contol knob.I just bought the jeep a month ago .This is my fisrt grand cherokee previously owned a 99tj sport and 08 wrangler limited . yhanks in advance for any help!

Re: code definitions

The code 52 is for the recirculation door travel too large. This is most probably a broken recirculation door hinge. When this happens, the door falls on top of the blower motor air exit and blocks most of the airflow. For that reason you donīt feel a change in flow from the outlets, while the blower speed changes. Just remove the blower motor from the passengers footwell area (1 connector and 3 screws) and look up. You probably see the door blocking the exit. Repair would mean removal of the dash and HVAC housing. You could secure the door with a wire or so, so that you will have normal airflow for now, until you decide to do a final repair.
Code 56 is for the right temperature door travel too large (passengers belnd door). That seems strange, since you say that you donīt have heat on the drivers side. This code however, mostly means a broken blend door hinge (eventhough the doors where changed before).

Re: code definitions

Thank you for the information I will check it out on the weekend. I did pull the blend door motor behind the glove box and the white plastic piece that drives the blend door is broken so the hinge doesnt turn .Could this be the reason for code 56?.Also today my door locks wont unlock with the key fob or when using the lock button. They will lock and the drivers side is the only one that unlock and locks.Any input on this issue would be much appreciated. thanks. my02overland

Re: code definitions

Yes, if the connection between the actuator and the blend door is disturbed, the actuator will continue rotating and then the code for "travel too large" will be set. Only strange thing is that the code 56 is for the right blend door travel too large, which should be the passengers side (which sits on the front side of the HVAC housing and can not be seen without removing the HVAC.) You found a problem with the blend door actuator behind the glove box, which is for the drivers side.
Regarding the door locks, the drivers door module only switches the drivers door lock, while the passengers door module, switches all the other door locks. Does the drivers door lock work also with the remote? The reason i ask is, that the receiver for the remote lock/unlock, sits inside the passengers door module. If this module is dead, only the drivers door lock continues to work, but not via the remote. You could try a battery reset, which can reset a frozen door module. If that doesnīt help, than check the wires in the passengers side rubber door boot. The thick black wire is too rigid and will break after many times flexing. But eventually it can be an other wire in the boot, so check them all.

Re: code definitions

Thank you for the information on the door lock problem. The key fob does work on the drivers side in both lock and unlock positions and the fob will only lock all doors. i have to manually unlock both passenger doors and drivers rear and the back hatch. Looks like i will be busy this saturday. thanks for passing your knowledge on these issues. How do you know all this stuff? have a great day!!!!

Re: code definitions

So than it looks like that the unlock driver in the passenger door module is not working. I would still try the battery reset, you never know. If you still have the factory radio, than you will need the code to make it working again after the battery reset.
Regarding my WJ knowledge, some of it i discovered after having problems myself, other things by helping others and surfing the web or using the factory service manual.
