Diagnostic help

I have 95 grand Cherokee limited, with the 5.2 v8. I got it in a trade because it's my new toy, but it has some driving issues. It feels as if the vehicle is shifting at random, when accelerating it shifts fine until I get going a little bit and then the rpms shoot up and the car is still moving forward but almost feels like a lower gear, also when decelerating the car will stop hard like its downshifting wrong, any help will be greatly appreciated!
