drivetrain noise under center console

I am working on a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee. First the issue, we are hearing a rotational noise under the center console, only on bumps and when decelerating. Sounds like an electric solenoid fluttering under low voltage. However, it definitely changes with speed, will not do it on the lift, and does not do it with the front driveshaft removed. Now, for a list of what we have done, for unrelated issues we just rebuilt the Transmission, replaced front shocks and rear upper control arm and ball joint. We replaced both front Hub bearings as they were screaming, rebuilt the front Diff as it had play, rebuilt the transfer case (thought the noise was in the output bearing), and even replaced the front driveshaft, all to no avail. Same noise, same spot, now with the hub bearings quiet, I can hear it better. Anyone have any thoughts? I thought maybe a defective torque converter, My transmission builder insists that can't be it.

Re: drivetrain noise under center console

Welcome to the garage.
If the noise changes with speed and not with engine rpm, then it canīt be the torque converter.
You changed the complete drive shaft with its joints?
How was the chain inside the T-case? Not stretched?

Re: drivetrain noise under center console

We had transfer case apart twice, rebuilt it the second time, chain had no slack

Re: drivetrain noise under center console

So it seems the only thing left over are the CV-joints from the front axles. Where they checked for play or abnormal force needed to move them around?

Re: drivetrain noise under center console

We are not aware of any play in either front c/v joint, but the one axle did lock when wheel deflected full right. Not arguing possibility, but seems strange that I hear it in the center console just below the radio and not a clicking noise on turns like most c/v joints. We have the right side shaft here. Will change it, but not sure it will help. Note: noise does not change with steering.

Re: drivetrain noise under center console

Sometimes noise propagates in ways you wonīt expect. You have now changed almost all possible parts and it has something to do with torque to the front wheels, since there is no noise without the drive shaft and also not when not loaded (on the lift).
Let us know how it is with the new axle.
