Engine codes p0171 and p0420 help

I just purchased a 2012 JGC 6cylinder 58,000 miles 2 days ago. Check engine light came on tonight and pulled both of these codes p0171&p0420. Any help with what these might be would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Engine codes p0171 and p0420 help

Correct me if I sm wrong please. One is an O2 sensor bank 1 the other is the catalytic converter. Should I do the O2 sensor first and see if corrects both codes or go to the dealer and see what they say

Re: Engine codes p0171 and p0420 help

Yes, the P0171 means a lean mixture on bank 1 and P0420 a low efficiency of the bank 1 catalist. If you have a scanner with live data, then you could monitor the O2 sensor voltages and see if there is a sensor fault.
A faulty 1-1 O2 sensor (upstream sensor bank 1) could cause both codes, so i would start with a new O2 sensor.
