Nominate Engine needs replacing

We on my way to France (from England) by car. 10 miles from home, I hear a bang, then black smoke out of the exhaust, and struggled past 2,000 RPMs.
Anyway, so I returned home, then the next morning took it to a garage. And had to go.

I have just got back, and the garage have told me the turbo had broken and leaked oil in the engine. They say i'm gonna need a new engine with a turbo. the only sign I had was a slight leak from what looked like a seal new the turbo. In hindsight the leak must've been coming from the turbo.

So friends have told me the turbo should be replaced, and as the engine wasn't driven too much will need to be cleaned.

But the garage tell me the I need a new engine with a turbo. They are sure the engine is finished, so now i'm looking for a reconditioned/second hand engine with turbo.

Does anyone else think the engine should remain? this is the first time I have had to replace the whole engine.

Also, does anyone have any idea where I can find a second hand Jeep Cherokee 2.8 CRD engine with turbo in the UK?

Re: Engine needs replacing

If you do need a new one go to

http://www.partsgateway.co.uk/

Enter what you're looking for and they'll get back to you with availability and prices.

I can't imagine the engine being totally knackered, doesn't sound right to me but I don't know too much about it. I'd definately get a second opinion

All the best

Aaron

Re: Engine needs replacing

Thanks, yes, i'm on Parts Gateway and also Parts Request.

So far no joy, I have spoken to some friends and also one friends best mate is a mechanic, he seemed to agree with the garage. The biggest problem at the moment is sourcing an engine with a turbo.

I will keep looking...

Re: Engine needs replacing

What all did they say it did to the engine? Did they do a tear down of the engine?
Got any pictures of the damage?

The only reason I can see replacing the whole thing is if it broke/cracked the block, even then some parts should still be good.

Re: Engine needs replacing

Hi All,

Thanks for getting back to me. I have been to see them again. They have had the car for a week, and luckily have not found a new engine. basically, upon talking to one the technicians, this garage do not truly spend time on the job. They work on qunatity. So they had decided the best course of action would be to change the engine.

Another friend who is a mechanic, he has soken to another mechanic that specializes in Chrysler motors. He doesn't seem to think its the whole engine. From what I had described to him he think it sounds like the rocker and rod on one of the cylinders. he seems to think this is a standard problem with Jeeps. So he has recommed another local garage near me.

I had spoken with this garage, and they will charge around 300 for deliver my car, and diagnose the fault.

Does anyone know any good engineering garages in London/Essex for Jeeps?

I need to speak with some other garages to get a better idea of my next move. Definitly, I won't be giving up on my engine.

Re: Engine needs replacing

Go to this forum: http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f67/ and post a question for Merlin

He is a very knowledgeable Jeep mechanic in the UK. He might be able to help you.

Also, isn't the 2.8L CRD a Mercedes engine? If you need more info, you might want to try some Mercedes forums.

Re: Engine needs replacing

I thought the 2.8 CRD was actually an Italian VM brand engine?
