ESP/ABS light on after steering mechanism maintenance

The retainer rings (if that's what they are called) in the steering gear mechanism were replaced in my 2008 Patriot 2WD. After that the ESP/ABS light on the dash board is continuously on when the engine is running. It seems to drive fine, as far as I can feel but I am concerned the replacement may have been made incorrectly.
Or could it simply be a matter of driving a while or getting the code erased?
Any suggestions will be appreciated.
Michael
