Flash Updates

What are flash updates and why does the dealership charge labor for them?

Flash updates are firmware software updates to the various computers in your Jeep. If your dealership is charging labor for software flashes it is time to look for a new dealership. Any dealership I have ever done business with has never charged for flash updates and/or the labor to install them.

******* Been thinking about something: There are two software updates your dealership will charge you for: (1.) If your radio didn't come with Navigation and you want to add it, (2.) Map updates for Navigation. This is because FCA does not own the Navigation/Map company.

Re: Flash Updates

Recalls or TSB's should not be charged to the customer. If your looking for radio firmware updates, these can be done by yourself (just need to download the software onto a USB stick). As MacFan has stated, if they are charging you then it is definitely time to find a different dealership.

I've never been charged and my dealer tends to install all of them unless I ask them not to.... OP didn't mention whether or not they were under any extended service plans.

However, disagrees with this note over on
Jeep Grand Cherokee WK2 - 2011-2016 Grand Cherokee Service Bulletins and Recalls

SERVICE BULLETINS ARE NOT A WARRANTY ITEM FOR VEHICLES OUT OF WARRANTY. It is important to note that "Preventive" service repairs will generally not be performed under warranty during the normal warranty period if a vehicle is not exhibiting the particular symptom or problem. TSB's are not recalls. If you ask your dealer to perform the modification outside of the warranty period, expect to pay for the labor and parts.

Re: Flash Updates

OP didn't give near enough information on this situation - we only know you have a 2014 model; how many miles are on it? What's the delivery date on it? If you're out of the 3 yr./36,000 mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, are you still within the 5 yr. 60,000 mile powertrain warranty? If you're still under either warranty they shouldn't be charging you at all for flash updates, and you should contact Chrysler direct to get reimbursed for same. If you're outside all warranty coverage, go find another dealer - you might find one to do them at no charge.
