It could be, because there may be air in the fluid pump or somewhere in the system, try to drive vehicle on different angles i.e uphill , downhill, sideslope - left and right. This should let the air in the system to escape easier.
Regular driving could help to but will take a while for the air to escape.
The pump has to operate to force the air out of the system. Make it work.

Re: front wheels not driving

Make as tight as possible figure 8 turns. In that way there is the largest speed difference between the two front wheels and the pump in the vari -lok should do its best to build pressure to lock the clutch. This should be the quickest way to make it work. Did the diff loose fluid during the axle removal, or was the level already low before. Driving with low fluid level can damage the pump and diff bearings.

Re: front wheels not driving

No loss at disassembly, but I did find a bad seal..... Had to add almost a quart to fill it. Seems to be trying to grab, just isn't yet. I'm on the right track! I'll give your suggestions a try and report back.... Thanks again!

Re: front wheels not driving

ok, so i did the figure 8's,to no avail.... so i took the diff cover off to do a visual check. start poking around and saw that i couldn't see the end of the new axle shaft. it turns out that the new shaft was for a selec-trac (read too short). i should have double checked that BEFORE re assembly, instead of assuming that it was the right length because that wheel was pulling..... i still have to put the diff fluid in, but aside from that, i think i have finally cured this problem. thasnk you frango100 for the insight, and, i wish i would have checked this weeks ago when you first asked about the shaft length.... LOL

Re: front wheels not driving

Good to know that you have figured it out. And you are not the first one who experienced this problem. As you see its always a good idea to compare the old with the new part to be sure that they are identical.

Re: front wheels not driving

yes, a hard lesson learned! to any others on this page reading this, MAKE SURE you specify what is in your jeep. mine is a quadra-drive, they gave me an axle assy. for a selec-drive. i didn't even know those options were available in that model year! thank you all, especially Frango100!
