Frustrated with Uconnect.

I have a 2011 Grand Cherokee which I purchased new. My only disappointment is that there is no capability to receive or send SMS or iMessage from an iPhone. I have read that this is an issue between Apple and Chrysler which is unresolved, but I may be wrong. I am now considering trading my vehicle for a 2015 but this ongoing issue with SMS is discouraging.

Just venting my frustration. I hate to purchase a Samsung or some other brand when it seems obvious that an agreement should be negotiated with Apple.

The funny part to me is that when I purchased my 2014 Jeep Cherokee Limited II that my salesman swore up and down that I had to get an iPhone like he had in order to get all of the Uconnect features to work. Now I do really like Apple products and in fact am typing this on a Mac Book Pro laptop but I just can't justify the cost of an iPhone and/or its service contract. So I bought my Jeep anyway thinking some of the features just wouldn't work and I would have to live with that. Long story short, I bought a pay as you go Android Tracfone (Samsung Galaxy Centura). With all of the accessories it cost me around $100. Best part there is no contract and it works PERFECTLY with all of the features of Uconnect.

The issue is with Apple, not with Chrysler. Apple has some pretty unique ideas concerning product testing - they don't like letting other companies use beta equipment.
In your case with the 2011, the UConnect modules were manufactured before Apple got around to sending Chrysler anything to test with. Chrysler was understandably unwilling to postpone production just to wait for Apple.

Interesting replies, but are the current models compatible? I know that there updates in firmware for Uconnect but sadly not for my VIN.

Whereas SMS works perfectly on an encrypted Blackberry...

Problem with Apple is that their users tend to resemble cultists--and the company's pretty much flat unwillingness to work with any other company to develop applications or interoperability unless you sign a contract in blood at a crossroads at midnight, and even then you must provide a team of exactly 13 engineers and only work at night.

I probably can be counted as a cultist as I have an iPhone, iPad, as does my wife, two adult kids and their spouses. Even my grandchildren can use an iPad. This makes it difficult to switch to Blackberry or some other leading brand which is Uconnect capable as we use iMessage extensively, as well as other features such as photo stream sharing.

Damn it's hard to be in a cult! I never-the -less have left my name at my dealership to get one of the first 2015 Grand Cherokees off the line.

I must be a cultist as this will be my 7th since 1997 when switched to Chrysler.
