Hard abrupt transmission shifting

Vehicle is 2004 Grand Cherokee standard V8 (non-HO) with 99000 mi on the odo. Throttle sensor was replaced due to the typical symptoms (hard erratic up/down shifting, in/out of OD) less than 3500 miles ago and the hard shifting problem is returning. Anyone have any ideas? No trouble codes yet! Thank you!

Re: Hard abrupt transmission shifting

Welcome to the garage.
Harsh shifting is indeed many times caused by the TPS, but also could be due to one of the two speed sensors on the transmission.
The TPS is well known to fail after time and it could be that the one you have is having a problem already. Is the problem the same as it was before?

Re: Hard abrupt transmission shifting

Thank you for your ideas. The current problem is random and not as severe as before. Last time I got a trans warning light after the OD was "hunting" in-out, shifting up-down. Now its just a harsh, hard shift that can be felt through the seat. I have not seen any warnings yet. How do you like your Monroe reflex shocks? I'm just about due...

Thank you!

Re: Hard abrupt transmission shifting

You could try a battery disconnect to erase a part of the memory of the TCM and see what it does. If the shifts become really hard, it would be time to check the accumulator springs in the valve body. A broken spring, or what also happens that the accumulator spring plate screws break, could lead to harsh shifting. You could also try a quick learn procedure at a shop which has the DRBIII scanner, that will bring the shifts back to factory setting.
The Monroe reflex are quite comfortable. I would like to do something about the body roll however with an Addco rear swaybar, but shipping is so expensive that i leave it as is.
