help asap!!!

In my 1999 jeep grand Cherokee limited I am having a oil pressure issue at start up it runs fine but After awhile it drops from 40 to 20 and then when I slow down and stop it drops down like I shut the engine off yes I've checked to make sure ask my caps are on tight. Should I stop driving it or is it just a sensor issue?

Re: help asap!!!

If it doesn´t make any abnormal noises, i would say that it most probably is the oil pressure sending unit. With low oil pressure, the hydraulic valve lash adjusters will start making tapping noises and you can hear cluncking noises as well. If no abnormal noises, i would just change the oil pressure sending unit, which is quite common to fail.

Re: help asap!!!

It sounds like the oil pressure switch ..as that is what my 03 GC overland 4.7lt is doing right now and mine is the switch, my problem is jeep used 3 different switches and even with the vin they can't work out which one is in mine, I have taken pics of it and texted them to jeep spare parts, way things are going I will get it off eBay from Melbourne and install it myself as jeep say 110.00 labour to unscrew it and screw new one in.

Re: help asap!!!

Not aware of 3 different types. I know that 99-03 models use a pressure sensor (with real pressure indication on the instrument panel), and end of 03 they changed to a pressure switch ( with a fixed pressure indication on the instrument panel when there is a minimum required pressure, or just 0 indication).

Re: help asap!!!

Hope you find the problem, as for my 03 there is a short and long bodied 1 blade pin version, same with a 3 pin version and now the old 1 pin has been superseded by a 3 pin which won't fit mine as there is only 1 wire on the plug with no option to go 3 wire. Go figure!

Re: help asap!!!

If you have a one wire plug, then you already have a low pressure switch an not a pressure sending unit. The pressure sending unit uses 3 wires, from which one is a 5V supply.

Re: help asap!!!

Yes I know, but Jeep have superseded it to a 3 pin, the plug on mine is a 2 pin plug using one side, in Jeeps system the old part number has been removed, it's blank. Local dealer asked for pics of my switch so he could send to Jeep to prove mine is 1 pin as vin says otherwise, so Jeep don't even know which one they put in my car, anyway bought new 1 pin one from Melbourne via eBay so for me the problem is solved. 1999gcl has stated what his is eg. 2.7 , 4.0 or 4.7 , 4.7ho there all different, but does sound like same problem as mine as guage is doing the same thing.

Re: help asap!!!

You already bought the sensor, otherwise i would say have a look at rockauto.com. They sell the pressure switch for a two pin connector with only one pin used.

Re: help asap!!!

No worries! The one I purchased is the right one, all I was trying to say is that Jeep will only supply a 3 pin now. At least that is what it seems like, the communication with Jeep is deplorable, but I do love my car despite that.

Re: help asap!!!

Fixed mine it was the oil pressure switch, what happens is when then motor reaches operating temp the oil thins and leaks through the centre of the switch and shorts out the electrical plug, which makes the gauge on the instrument panel do weird things, check the plug where it plugs into the oil pressure switch, if it is flooded with oil replace the switch.
