horrible noise when shifting to reverse

Good evening all,
The last couple days the service 4wd system light has been on. Then yesterday when I tried to shift from park to reverse it made a horrible grinding noise. I had a buddy scan the system for codes and this is what he got C1405 transfer case range position sensor circuit height. C1406 transfer case brake performance. I figured someone on here could tell me what this means. My buddy told me he couldn't help me to go to the dealer. Any help would be great I do not want to get robbed by the dealer if its something simple.

Re: horrible noise when shifting to reverse

My guess is those two codes are unrelated to your grinding noise. If your just shifting from park to reverse your not moving, other than a slight drivetrain loadup there will be little to no movement into the transfercase. Other than that I am stumped... does it do it regularly now or just that one time?

Re: horrible noise when shifting to reverse

It has done it twice to me in 2 days. My buddy who is a mechanic but never works on Jeeps got it to do it when he was looking at it. He thinks it has something to do with the shift lever position.

Sounds and feels like it is coming from right under the shifter but when we put it on the hoist to take a listen it wouldn't do it.

Re: horrible noise when shifting to reverse

Well the problem was a bad transfer case motor. So for the bend over and take it fee of 650.00 bucks I got my jeep back minus the noise and the codes.
