Interested in a ZJ 5.9L with Cyl #8 Misfire Need Help

I found a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.9L V8 with 179k on it. They guy is asking a pretty good price for it. I called him up and he told me it has a Misfire in Cylinder #8. I've done my research, but I would like some help to make sure I find the problem before buying it and maybe I can offer him a reasonable price to sell it at. It's pretty clean overall. Needs new Headlights and the Lovers on the hood are peeling. I can get those painted. I think the headliner is coming down too from the pictures. I think there's a dent on the Passenger side Rear Door, but I'm not 100% sure.

The guy says it's his sisters and she's asking $2,000. I could fix it and keep it since ZJ's are my favorite Jeeps anyways.

I found a few things that would fix the Cylinder #8 Misfire (I will do the Key Dance and check what codes it's throwing):
-Needs new Coil Pack
-New Plugs, Cap, Wires, Rotor and Coil
-Possibly new Plenum Gasket (I've heard the gaskets go bad) I can check by opening the throttle body and check if there is oil in the intake.

Here's some pictures:

Re: Interested in a ZJ 5.9L with Cyl #8 Misfire Need Help

It sounds like you are on the right track. I would guess that it hasn't been that well taken care of, maintenance wise. If you did a full tune up you should be in good shape but know that the engine still has quite a bit of miles and more repairs are going to pop up. A good upholstery shop should be able to recover the headlines. Just be careful when removing it to not bend it. It comes out pretty easy once you figure out how to remove the seat belts on the pillars. I wish I never would have sold my 5.9L

I'm going to call him up today and see what I can do. You can tell it hasn't been maintained and if he's asking this low of a price I could probably drop it lower.

Re: Interested in a ZJ 5.9L with Cyl #8 Misfire Need Help

Yep the lower plenum plate is a common failure that if it hasnt been done is likely failing... is it your problem? I would lean towards unlikely as the plenum plate would affect more than one cylinder. But a possibility none the less. To inspect for this you got the right idea, pop the intake pipe off the throttle body, open the throttle blades and give a look-n-see. Typically I have most luck looking over at the passanger side (inside the manifold) and if you can get to a place where you can see the seam where the plenum plate meets the manifold you will see the gasket blow out. Know that if this is your problem there is an updated plenum plate that is thicker than the original one.

Give the rest of the car a good look over, a good deal turns into not a good deal when you pay for a car that needs brakes, tires, lower plenum plate repair, full tuneup.

Enjoy, I love the ZJ too, especially this 98 limited. If I wasnt 6'5" I would have my eye open for one!

Paul... we'll talk down the line. I received an offer to buy someone's five nine, it only has 2wd right now with 130k miles though... I'll be following your thread with interest.

Re: Interested in a ZJ 5.9L with Cyl #8 Misfire Need Help

A dented misfiring high mileage 5.9ZJ? Tell him 1k cash, take it or leave it. Then again, I am agressive when buying items that have known problems.

The 5.9ZJ is really nothing special , it has all the typical ZJ problems with less gas mileage and higher initial cost thanks to people thinking its actually worth something. Its a nearly 15 yr old SUV based on technology MUCH older than that.

If you need help selecting mods, PM or Email me, although I dont offer Magnum TBs or anything like that I've helped pick out parts on several with very good results.

This 5.9 will ned some work which is what I think, but not if itd major. I don't lie the see a 5.9 being trashed up. So why not by it for cheap and fix it and possibly sell it? I know that it will need new tires also.

With that kind of mileage, and the potential repair list, unless you have spare parts laying around, or have above average (for a shade-tree mechanic anyhow) bodywork/mechanic skills, you will never turn a profit on it. At least not in an honest way (Ive seen people swap instrument clusters with lower mileage- ) I'd bet money on it being a tough sale for profit. I am really not trying to sh*t on your potential acquisition, but I have done this dance before with flipping, and know all of the moves.

You have to remember. This is a beat-on Jeep that is now 3 generations old. Especially if there is any thoughts of flipping it, you have to examine the "what-if". What if that cyl 8 misfire is actually a F'd piston from all the pinging from the blown plenum gasket? Not only will you naturally have to fix the F'd plenum gasket (expected) , but now you will need to at minimum pull the motor- do you have the tools/$$$ set aside to do that? does it just need a new std bore piston or is the cyl wall trashed? If the latter, than you will have to replace all 8 pistons....... My point is that things can very quickly spiral into something much more serious than initially planned.

If you decide to keep it....completely different story. Throw a bunch of money at it and make it fun, and milk it for all its good for. But I would SERIOUSLY re-evaluate the idea of flipping it.

Re: Interested in a ZJ 5.9L with Cyl #8 Misfire Need Help

It's either I keep it or I sell it. I always wanted one so I might as well. $1,000 seems fair to me and that's what I was thinking about showing up with.

You do bring up some very good points. If I acutally want one I should just buy one with lower miles for a tad more. I was thinking I could low ball this guy/fix it and sell it, but I may be stuck like with what you said.

Re: Interested in a ZJ 5.9L with Cyl #8 Misfire Need Help

I also want to check the transfer-case while I'm at it. Someone told me to do the figure 8's to see if the front hops. If it does it will need a new VC so I'll just try and drop it lower possibly. I want to check it out though.

To check and see if the Piston is bad, I'll bring a Compression Tester.

Fixed the quote for you.

Because Jeeps are all purpose vehicles, most of them of this vintage are either beaters or need of significant TLC. Its not like a Foxbody mustang where some were kept in nice shape because they were Sunday drivers only.

almost ANY ZJ you buy, especially a 5.9 because they had some different equipment, if you want to make it nice (meaning you can enjoy it regularly without quirks), you can expect to toss down AT LEAST 5k in various upgrades/repairs. Maybe a little less if you are capable of doing some/most/all of the work without hired help, and/or buy parts secondhand.

My suggestion to you, if you are dead set on having a ZJ...search for a '96 or '97 5.2- better gas mileage, more common cheaper, trans cooler from the factory, lighter, and personalize it for how you want it. If you want the 5.9 look, get the wheels off Ebay or thespeedfreaks.net or something. The extra displacement is nice to have but not necessary. I helped a friend build a all motor street driven 5.2 ZJ that could hang with bolt-on SRT8 Jeeps...
