Intermittent no start, died on freeway

I am trying to help a friend, he has a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0 4wd, auto-trans.
Died on the freeway and would not restart. Tow it to my place, seemed to have spark and fuel pressure was 38-40 psi. It tried to fire a few times so I held the pedal to the floor and it came to life. BUT… It stumbles, hic-cups, dies, is hard to restart, intermittent mis-fire, and is driving me nuts.
OK, did some basic inspections, spark plugs were beyond worn out, replaced, no change.
Plug wires had corrosion on both the spark plug end and dist cap end, replaced Cap, Rotor, and wires.
Dist has 1/8” or more of play, back and forth – side to side, installed a new aftermarket distributor.
And for just because reasons, replaced the crankshaft position sensor. Nothing has helped.
IAT sensor works and has voltage, TPS also seems to be ok, MAP also tests ok, no vacuum leaks, Temp sender to ECU runs at 2.5 - 2.8v at operating temp.
Someone please help. Thank you.

Re: Intermittent no start, died on freeway

Welcome to the garage.
Did you already do a compression test on all cylinders?
I was thinking timing or eventually the PCM. If the compression is ok, i would think that the timing is as well.
No faults set in the PCM?
Eventually a clogged exhaust.

I would look at your mileage and hours. It might be timing chain time. Expensive repair and or time consuming.
