Re: Jeep 4.7 Grand Cherokee Ltd Gearbox

This is interresting. I wonder how your mechanic came to his conclusion. There is not such a thing as a first clutch. To select 1st gear, two clutch packs are pressurized (this is for every gear selection, but ofcourse for each gear an other combination of clutches). Was the transmission making abnormal noises when driving? Did the mechanic lower the pan to have a look at the internals?
6 hours to change the transmission doesnīt look bad at all. I did it myself laying on the ground under the jeep, but it took me for sure at least double that time.

Re: Jeep 4.7 Grand Cherokee Ltd Gearbox

It may be that they call it a different terminology but one thing is for sure, the oil that came out was like from a deep fat fryer after 20 years, so yucky

But the gearbox now in is driving like a dream, I am very happy

But, isn't there always a but

When underneath they found (and showed me) that the front axle dif bearing was rubbish and a lot of play (the bearing where the prop goes into the diff housing) so we are driving it with only the rear diff connected at the moment

I have a used axle arriving soon, and they are going to swap it over, 4 hours estimate ? sounds about right to me

Checking the oil quality (colour/smell) is the first thing to do when a transmission gives problems. It can give an idea what is going on inside.
You where lucky to find a good transmission for not too much. Overhere not many jeeps where sold, so finding any from a junkyard is almost impossible and when they have it, it will cost a fortune.
The bearing you are talking about is the pinion bearing. Didnīt the diff loose fluid at the pinion seal?
4 hours to change the front axle sounds about right.

Re: Jeep 4.7 Grand Cherokee Ltd Gearbox

The Jeep got through its yearly UK Road Worthy Test we call it MOT in January

Just had to change the rear bushes on the axle, which I believe is quite a common thing on Jeeps, so all was good really,

They didn't notice any leaks which would be a failure on MOT so either the bearing went afterwards or there wasn't any oil in it to leak out

The way I look at my Jeep is I love it, far better to drive than my Land Rover Discovery, and far quieter as well, more comfy and it handles so much better

OK the Discovery would probably be better in mud but I so rarely do that sort of off roading, it doesn't worry me in the slightest, I own a woodland and the Jeep in the dry has gone up hills that the Discovery almost died on so yesI will keep to the Jeep and after all this is done at least I will know that most of the repairs will give me quite a few more years out of it
