Jeep Grand Cherokee 2015 Key FOB Not Detected

Had my vehicle disabled with this issue in Death Valley. I got out of my car and when i came back the vehicle would not start and displayed a message of "key FOB Not Detected". After reaching a land line called a few dealerships who all said to pry the start stop button off. Well I did that but stopped short of causing more damage as I could not get to any back up key system like I had in other cars, plus allot of other solutions and all to no avail.

Had the car towed 85 miles to Parump NV where the dealer informed on the 2015 models there is no longer a manual/back up key to start the car and that what I experienced shouldn't have happened. It will take a week for repairs as some module needs to be ordered from a factory in Tennessee. I rented a car and drove 7 hrs back home and await more info.

I get that computers can have issues but to have a no manual way to start the vehicle that can get into remote places is a really bad system design. Anyone have more insight on this issue. I have no confidence now in this vehicle going anywhere remote.

Wow, having that particular problem in death valley out of all places really tops it all off. I haven't heard much about this specific problem, so I would be interested to know which specific control module went bum if replacing it fixed the problem.

This also raises a very good question that I always wondered but I haven't done any research on. Does our jeeps interact with our key fobs via an active RF signal (i.e. requires battery power) or is it passive?

The Owner's Manual has a detailed explanation. Yes - it is an active RF signal transmitter and needs a battery in the key-fob. The engine START/STOP button has an induction coil around it that will allow you (in case of emergency) to use a key-fob with a dead battery to start the car. To do that use the nose end (the side opposite to the emergency key insert) of the key-fob to push the start button.

Re: Jeep Grand Cherokee 2015 Key FOB Not Detected

I tried touching the key to the start stop button as a dealer I contacted suggested doing that. It wasn't successful, but its possible I may have done it wrong. However the dealer I had the vehicle towed to could get the vehicle started at all and unfortunately the car sits in Nevada while Im in Arizona for an entire week awaiting parts.

I also tried prying off the cap of the start/stop button as was suggested by another dealer but I later learned that the back up keye'd ignition is not in the new 2015 models so needless to say I practically pulled my ignition system out.

So now I wonder if its just a computer screw up or was it caused by RF interference. FOBs are activated on two frequencies 315Mhz and 434mHZ with the former showing some signs of jamming from other devices, based some material I have read.

I have seen now several instances in the Jeep 2014-2015 models and Dodge Charger 2014-2015 of this "key Fob Not Detected" issue being reported by others. My main worry is was in a remote back country rd just prior to this event. If the system went out there it probably would have required a heavy lift chopper to get the car out.

I think the tech has surpassed most mechanics training and the solution now is always to replace a module, that of the core issue is a bug in the code the problem is never fixed. The second issue is for a company who markets a line of vehicles as go-anywhere someone will get stuck as there is now no longer a mechanical way to get the vehicle started as a back up.

Re: Jeep Grand Cherokee 2015 Key FOB Not Detected

I can see a new firmware update coming. I always carry spare batteries for the FOB but the jeep tells you when FOB batteries are low. Just to put your mind at ease I had a Subaru blow a tranny just outside Flint, MI in the Winter on my way back to upstate NY crossing through Canada. It was 3 days old. I coaster up the highway of ramp and found a dealer and a rental car in a Sunday afternoon. It took 17 days to import anew transmission as it was under warranty. Another guy in this period had his blow and they found a tranny in a scrap yard. The only 2 transmission that Subaru dealer changed in the whole year. Subaru is also known for not letting you down. Hopefully Jeep will make this right. I got stuffed in car rental but had no options. Last Subaru I owned after 3 of them and no problems.

Re: Jeep Grand Cherokee 2015 Key FOB Not Detected

Okay, I just ran into the same problem yesterday (3-8-2015). Luckily it happened in front of my home. I had just driven the car 40 minutes prior with no problems. The vehicle is a 2015 Grand Cherokee Overland that I picked up on 12/31/2014 and only has 1693 miles on it now. It had to be towed to the shop, and I am still awaiting a reply. The dealership informed me that it still isn't working for them, so that rules out RF interference. This is really frustrating that there is not a backup, like a code we can type into the UConnect system to override the key fob.

Re: Jeep Grand Cherokee 2015 Key FOB Not Detected

Hi, brand new member. My wife had the issue today with her 2015 JGC Summit. It has been a mess bc my wife tried to handle it on her own. I Googled the message "key fob not detected." It is apparently a well known or well documented issue on some forums. There are two solutions to get it running. 1. pull a fuse, F51, in the fusebox and reseat it or 2. disconnect the battery for up to 5 minutes then reconnect. Both have the effect of resetting the keyless entry system. The F51 fuse is a light blue 15 fuse in the middle/upper right quadrant of the fuse box.
I am still to mad to go into the idiocy of the service department at the dealership we purchased it from. They were absolutely useless. If you resort to towing and cannot get the vehicle in neutral, the emergency brake and transmission disengage lever are in the front armrest under a panel by the armrest hinge. Lever has a bright safety orange nylon cord attached to it.

Re: Jeep Grand Cherokee 2015 Key FOB Not Detected

I just endured the whole key fob not detected fiasco. Used the back of the fob to start the car to get home to find this website. This morning I reset the F51 fuse as described above. Needed some needle nose pliers to pull the fuse but was presently surprised to then get in the car and it started right up. I am carrying the pliers in the car from now on.

Re: Jeep Grand Cherokee 2015 Key FOB Not Detected

Hi there,
I was reading an online manual for 2015..and it said :

"NOTE: In case the ignition does not change with the
push of a button, the RKE transmitter (Key Fob) may
have a low or dead battery. In this situation, a back up
method can be used to operate the ignition switch. Put
the nose side (side opposite of the emergency key) of the
Key Fob against the Engine START/STOP button and
push to operate the ignition.
"

I guess thats what we should if nothing happens when pressing the button, I have a 2014 GC and never had a problem...but if the time comes hope this works ?...dont like the idea of been in a remote place and not being able to start my Jeep.
Rgds.
