Jeep grand Cherokee with problems

Hello my name it's adir and I'm from Israel.
I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee 2000 Engine 4.7 and I have a strange problem with him.
A week ago I went with the car a little puddle of water at high speed and at that moment I came on board almost all lamps Watch the rest of the half day it all worked out.
But the day after it rained lights came on me again without entering any puddle.
I believe there is a connector that looks every time the question of which can cause such a phenomenon
I'm sorry for my English.

Re: Jeep grand Cherokee with problems

Welcome to the garage Adir.
Your problem is only all the lights on, no problems with the engine? Tacho meter, odometer and all four other instruments work normally?
The instrument panel gets most of the information for the instruments and most of the lights via the PCI data bus. Moisture in any of the connectors where the PCI data wire runs through, can give problems as you have now. Since it started after driving through a puddle of water, i would expect a connector in the engine bay. Since the PCM (powertrain control module) is the most important module which uses the PCI data bus for many signals, i would start looking at the three connectors. Disconnect the battery negative terminal first, and then the three connectors from the PCM. You can find the PCM mounted to the bulkhead, close to the right fender. If any moisture present, then dry the connector and PCM side with dry air or use a contact spray.

Re: Jeep grand Cherokee with problems

All the instruments inoperative would mean or a problem in the instrument cluster itself, or that the information for the instruments (and the lamps) is not received by the cluster. Since it all happened after going through a puddle of water, i would suspect the second option. Many times water ingress in one of the connectors could short out the PCI data bus, with as a result that the engine doesn´t stay running, power windows and power locks stop working and the instruments are at zero. In your case the engine still runs. How about the power windows and locks?
The SKIS light is on (sentry key immobilizer system), which normally means a problem in the SKIS and an engine that doesn´t want to run. Was the PCM changed at some time and maybe the SKIS option deleted in the PCM programming?

Re: Jeep grand Cherokee with problems

Just checked the wiring schematics. How about the EVIC (electronic vehicle information center), does it show dashes instead of the fuel consumption figures? And the remote radio switches on the steering wheel, do they work?
Since water ingress in a connector normally causes a short of the PCI data bus, i wonder if water really is the problem here. When you went through the puddle of water, was there also not a pothole in the road, hidden by the water, which you hit with one of the wheels?
I´m asking this, because there is a diagnostic juntion port under the steering wheel area, where a shorting cap connects all the different components which are on the PCI data bus together. (this is not the data link connector, which sits under the dash board left side). This shorting cap is a very handy "tool" for trouble shooting PCI bus problems (and which was discontinued on newer models unfortunately), but if the cap will dislodge due to an impact (like a large pothole), then it could result in loosing the data bus connection to most of the connected components. Only the PCM, TCM (transmission control module) and SKIS are still hardwire conected to the bus and the jeep will continue running, but most of the other functions will be lost.

Re: Jeep grand Cherokee with problems

I did a long drive last Winter coming from cold wet weather to warmer coastal weather. I had all my service lights kick on and the speed control would not engage, otherwise the Jeep ran well. It turned out to be a bad wheel sensor. I tried power washing the wheel areas first, but make sure all you connections are dry as possible. I was lucky to have a Florida service center where this was repairable under a service contract. I tried almost everything I could find on the forum. Hopefully cleaning out all your electrical connections will work as it doesn't sound like any major modules have gone out. Best of luck. The rubber covers on a 15 year old vehicle may have dried a little letting moisture in somewhere. Best to start on the connectors that have been suggested.

remote radio switches on the steering wheel is dost not work.
cap connects diagnostic juntion port is ok
Power Windows and locks is don't work
But at the moment I turn on the engine without waiting lamp control turn off. The key lamp stays on.
And I shut off and opens the switch and wait for the lamp control will turn off and turn on the engine all work well for half a minute and then repeat the problem again

Re: Jeep grand Cherokee with problems

There is something happening with the PCI data bus. The last 3 fault codes are telling that the PCM doesn´t get messages from the TCM, the SKIM and the instrument cluster.
So i would start cleaning/drying the PCM connectors first (with battery disconnected) and see what it does.
For now i would ignore the rest of the fault codes.

Re: Jeep grand Cherokee with problems

Well after I ignore and rest the fauld codes the problem is almost gone.
But now the key lamp is on me from time to time and the problem which calls for a second and disappears alone.
And codes that appear to me now are:
P1281
P1686
P1687
P1698

Re: Jeep grand Cherokee with problems

Still bus communication problems between the PCM, TCM and SKIM. Did you check the PCM connectors?
