Jeep wont turn over.

Hi guy's, I'm new here to the site. I have a 04 Grand Cherokee Chief Laredo with the straight 6 cylinder. I'v had it for a couple of years and only problem I'v had is the same O2 sensor keeps going out. Had it changed 3 times. A few weeks ago I loaned it out to our son and when he brought it back it had a misfire. Used a scanner and it gave 3 codes, multiple misfires, misfire in cylinder 1, and misfire in cylinder 2. Changed plugs, they were in bad shape with a gap twice as wide as is called for. Started it and still had misfire and it stalled, so I changed the coil pack. Tried to start it again and would not turn over. All I could hear was the starter kicking in and a whine. After a few tries it would not do nothing. Charged the battery. Same thing. Took the battery and starter off, because it had always sounded like it was dragging or turning slow, carried them to advance where they were checked. Watched them check starter and although it would kick in and turn it didn't seem very strong and the battery would hold a charge but the amp's were low. They said the starter was good so reinstalled it and put a new battery in. Same thing exceptt not the starter clicks in a lot more times because of the new battery. Anyone ran it to something like this.

Re: Jeep wont turn over.

Welcome to the garage.
Which code for the O2 sensor did you get? A faulty O2 sensor could make the fuel/air ratio too lean, whith misfires as a result.
Does the starter motor still wine when trying to start? Seems that the starter pinion gear is not engaging the ring gear. Try first to rotate the crankshaft by hand with a socket on the damper bolt, just to be sure that there is no hydraulic lock. If ok, check the ground wire from the starter motor.
Sometimes corrosion on the battery cables close to the battery terminals is the cause. You will have to remove the isolation a bit to see this. When you switch the headlights on while trying to start, are they going dim? This would be a sign of a bad contact/corrosion.

Thanks Frank, code has not came back for O2 , found a water leak from hose dribbling down on to the sensor. Fixed the leak, new upper and lower hoses and tstat, cleared the code to see if that stopped it. don't think it ran enough for it to come back on yet. Did clean the battery connections well. Maybe when I said the starter whined, more like a faint grunt like it was trying but couldn't. And it grunts as long as I have the key turned. Went ahead and bought a new starter and will try it hopefully this weekend. Also will try to turn over engine with breaker bar but not sure what you mean by hydraulic lock.

Re: Jeep wont turn over.

Hydraulic lock means that there could be fluid (coolant for example) on top of a piston. If there is enough fluid and the piston is on its compression stroke (both inlet and exhaust valves closed), then the piston can not go any further up. This is the so called hydraulic lock. If you would force the engine enough to rotate, something will break. So for that reason it would be wise to turn the engine over with the breaker bar, just to be sure its not locked.
Did you switch the headlights on while trying to start? If they go very dim, then there is a good change of corrosion at some point. I didnīt mean the battery terminals themselves to be corroded, it happens that the wiring close to the battery terminal corrodes inside the insulation.

Re: Jeep wont turn over.

Thanks Frank. Motor did turn with ratchet. Put the new starter on and it fired right up. Hasn't run better since I purchased it. Driven it for the last two day's and the check engine light has not came on "yet". Got other thing's I'm planing to do to the Jeep later. Hand are kind of full right now with a Fox Mustang build.
