Key FOB Went Through The Wash

My wife heard it right away and got it out. Has anyone done this? How much trouble am I in? I took the key out of it, and blew out what I could with compressed air from one of those cans of computer / camera air. A little came out, but not much.

I haven't tried it yet because I want it to be dry. I have it tied with a piece of string to the front of a portable fan on high. I didn't take it apart because I don't know how. I watched a guy on You Tube try to replace the battery, and he struggled like hell with it. So I think I'll leave well enough alone..... For now.

Re: Key FOB Went Through The Wash

Use the AZ heat to your advantage :-)

I'd try to get the battery out so you don't end up with any corrosion on the contacts. If you can, leave it outside in the shade and let the heat dry it out for a good day or so. Maybe blow out any water every so often. As long as it fully dries it should still work

here's a video and it looks fairly easy to open.

That was my first thought as well. Put that FOB in a bag of rice and seal it up. Let it sit for 24 hours or more if you can. Also great advice to pop the battery if possible.

Once while on a fishing trip, a bud of mine dropped a mobile phone in the sink and it got wet. The phone was still powered in the on position and the phone did not behave as normal. We pulled the battery and put it in a zip log bag with a couple of those desiccant bags that ship with electronics and let it sit for 24 hours. Put the battery back in and it worked as normal.

Good luck.

I would remove the battery while you let it dry out.

I would like to clarify, that the rice should be raw. Uncooked Rice. LOL.

Re: Key FOB Went Through The Wash

Well first off your battery is going to be dead so you may as well take it apart to replace it. The first thing that will happen is the water will flash discharge the battery. That usually is what shorts out electronics when they get submerged. You could get lucky and have the battery be the only issue. Get it dried out. The longer you can let it sit and dry the better. Then reassemble with a new battery and give it a go to see what happens. You have a 50/50 chance of it being fine.
I have worked in the automotive electronics industry for 20 years and have seen some things be fine and some not once they get wet. The fortunate thing is it isn't soda or something sugary like that. If it were you could pretty much write it off.

I even had a Motorola Razr phone go through the wash twice and it still worked. Ear piece started sounding crappy, but it still worked. The saving grace is that it also went through the dryer before I noticed it missing. Took it out, let it cool, and plugged it in to charge and was good to go!

Uncooked rice works better. Dried beans also work for the same reason.
As effective as packing it in silica gel.

I'd suggest opening it if you can to make sure there is no moisture inside.
You could dunk it in absolute alcohol, but I'd doubt if worth the money or hassle.

Re: Key FOB Went Through The Wash

I took the key out and had it tied to the fan. I then took the fan out on the patio, (it's 96F out there now, and dry as a bone). I just removed it, put the key back into the slot and tried it. Everything works!

Door lock / unlock. Remote start and hatchback opener. And when it's in my pocket it let's me into the car. So I guess I lucked out. As I mentioned, it didn't go through the whole cycle, just a couple of minutes. It didn't even fill all the way.

I'm going to leave the key out of it and keep the fan on it until tomorrow. It can't hurt. Good to know they are at least "semi waterproof".

That's a good video. The one I watched was for a similar Dodge, and the guy struggled like the dickens trying to open it. This gal aced it. I stuck the spout from a container of "canned air" into the slot the key went into, and blew it several times. I think that helped as well.

Re: Key FOB Went Through The Wash

I had one go through the wash and found it in the pocket of my dried shorts a day later! This happened 3 or 4 months ago and it's still working fine with no issues (for now anyway!).

Mine is continuing to work flawlessly as well. Electronics either work, or they don't. I think if getting these things wet caused damaged, they would be done for at the first sign of water. That does not appear to be the case.
