Lose power after driving for a while, need help.

I have a 93 grand Cherokee Laredo 5.2 lt 4x4. Everything seems fine while driving on longer freeway trips (hour plus), until I slow down a little. Then when I try to accelerate I don't get power. RPMs go down as I press the gas pedal, then she eventually dies and can't be restarted until completely cooled down. Doesn't seem to give any problems while driving 20-30 minutes at a time, only longer periods of time. Just started out of the blue, no obvious warning signs.

I really need help with this, I have to have my jeep ready to get from Houston to Colorado by the first of January for a new job. Thank you, and let me know if there's anything else you need to know.

Sounds almost like the catalytic converter is starting to plug up. Did you happen to notice if you have a lot of heat coming from under the jeep

Did you check for any fault codes? This looks to me as a crank or cam position sensor problem. When it happens again, try to cool the sensor down with a wet towel (don't know the position on the 5.2 though, if you can reach it easily) and see if it starts right up. Something like this happened on my previous car.

I'll look into the crank/cam shaft sensor. Is there a definitive way to check the catalytic converter? And I had a friend locally say that it could be the fuel pump starting to go out, any input on that?

Thank you, I really appreciate the responses so far.

Re: Lose power after driving for a while, need help.

Is there a valve on the fuel rail, where you can measure pressure? If the jeep dies, you could easily press this valve and check if fuel under pressure comes out. Use a rag to prevent spilling of fuel on hot engine parts (risk of fire). You could also listen when switching the ignition in on, if you can hear the fuel pump run for 3 seconds. But if fuel under pressure is coming out of the fuel rail valve, the fuel pump is most probably not the culprit. Also the fact that you have to wait for the engine to cool down completely to be able to start again, makes me wonder if that would be the fuel pump.
