Nasty Squeel/screech 2004 GCL

When I start my 2004 Grand Cherokee Laredo it makes a horrible screech/squeel when it starts cold(sitting for like 8 hours). The power steering won't work until that noise is made It has 147,xxx miles on it. The power steering pump, serpentine belt and tensioner are brand new. Please help. I am stumped

Re: Nasty Squeel/screech 2004 GCL

Welcome to the garage.
The squeel and the fact that the power steering doesn´t work at that moment is a sign that the belt is slipping. Did you have a look yourself when someone else starts the jeep what is going on?
The tensioner can be new, but does the belt seem to be at the right tension? A too long belt for example can reduce the tension of the belt.
For how long does it squeel? Did you already try to rotate all the components driven by the belt to see if one is hard to rotate when cold? Just remove the belt for this test.

I took a look when my wife started it and everything looked fine to me. The belt is firm with no play in it. I haven't rotated the other components yet. It only last for a acouple seconds but extremely loud

Also want to mention this is the 2nd belt that has been on it since it started making this noise. I changed belts and new tensioner thinking it would solve the issue

Re: Nasty Squeel/screech 2004 GCL

The tensioner came with new pulleys?
Not sure if possible, but the belt is routed in the right way?
Best is to remove the belt and turn all components and pulleys to see if there is any difficult to rotate.
Does the tensioner itself also rotate without binding?

The tensioner caeme with new pulleys and the belt is on there the right way. When it gets out of the negatives I will have to undo the belt and rotate the pulleys

If you turn off the heater and A/C completely does it still make the noise?
If it squeals like heck on first start but never again, it still sounds like the belt is not tight enough--but you'd need to borrow a tension guage to tell.

It COULD be that the belt is just slightly misaligned, good luck finding/fixing something odd like that.

I had to get a new pulley for the power steering pump from autozone. Will that make a difference than getting one from a jeep dealer?

I'm not very good mechanically but I looked at the belt earlier and noticed there is some wear on the side of the belt if this helps

Re: Nasty Squeel/screech 2004 GCL

It can be that the new pump pulley is not completely aligned. You can press it a bit more on or pull it a bit off to get it aligned. You have to look at which side of the belt has the wear signs to kn ow to which side the pulley has to move.

The wear is on both sides. Both sides look the side. No one side is worse than the other
