Need HELP!!! NOT STARTING!!! WTF!!!

Hey guys and gals,

Any idea why my Jeep won't start. It's the VERY first cold day here in Michigan but my battery is only 5 months old so I can't understand why it won't start; not even cranking, just a slight click and that's it! All my lights come on, everything powers up, and I have a full tank of gas. I drove it last night to play basketball and did not have any problems. I AM FRUSTRATED AS H*LL. Could it be a starter issue. Anyone have any issues with it around the 40K mark? Any suggestions would be GREATLY APPRECIATED and THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!!!

PS- I tried both keys thinking the chip on the key went bad but no luck. Also disconnected the negative cable to reset my computer but was unsuccessful.

Re: Need HELP!!! NOT STARTING!!! WTF!!!

Sounds like a starter mate, unless the battery is in fact flat. Try getting a jump start first. Batteries are known to fail early.

When my starter failed, I'd started the Jeep, when one mile to a shop, and it wouldn't start, barely a click. I felt so impotent after coming from manual transmission vehicles where I could have clutch started it.

I hope you get it sorted bro!

Re: Need HELP!!! NOT STARTING!!! WTF!!!

Thanks guys I appreciate the support. Yeah, I took the battery up to O'Reilly's and it needed a 20 min charge but other than that it was good. I put it back in but still nothing, just a click. To add insult to injury the hood strut failed and knocked me in the head. When it rains, it pours, huh?! So quick ? is it a known issue for our WK's to have starter issues within the 40K mark? If so, will it still be covered under warranty or not? Any idea where the starter is located, I know it's close to the tranny but never got a chance to even look at it. With my wrangler, it was just out in the open. With the WK, it's hard to even see where it is... looks like I have to remove the plastic cover, eh? Thanks again for chiming in guys! Happy holidays to you and yours!!!!!

Re: Need HELP!!! NOT STARTING!!! WTF!!!

depends on what motor you have... not for location but ease of replacing. When I do a hemi wk starter I drop the front differential assembly (I am a big guy and need the hand space, plus it only takes like 5 minutes to drop it). you have to disconnect the driveshaft from the companion flange (which you would have had to have done to drop the diff assembly) and the bolts are accessable on the drivers side (going through the bellhousing into the starter). 1 13mm nut holds the main power feed and 1 single wire connector to the solenoid control.

they are tight in there, in a 4.7l they are more accessable (smaller engine, duh, plus the exhaust is smaller in diameter).

You have a dead spot on your starter.

Thanks for the info iJeep. But what do you mean? Called the dealer and for $140 I get a new starter and the new shield or spend almost $300 for the dealer to do it. Just got to find time and some warmth to put it on. Although, I'm not too sure if I'll be able to do it myself since I may have to pull the drive train out as stated above... I'm mechanically inclined but with limited tools. We'll see... picking up the parts tomorrow.

Re: Need HELP!!! NOT STARTING!!! WTF!!!

When I did mine with the 4.7 I did not have to remove the diff just the drive shaft and the plastic shield. It's tight to work under there but you gotta do what you gotta do.
Yes, these Jeeps have known starter issues.

Re: Need HELP!!! NOT STARTING!!! WTF!!!

Yup probably the starter, have someone bang on it while u try to crank the engine, and most likely itll start right up. Then drive it straight to where u gonna fix it/get it fixed!

the driveshaft... does it have 6 little bolts on each end? if so, is there anything that i should watch out for when removing it (like little parts within it or springs or what have)? it's freaking tight down there!

ps- i have the hemi.

Re: Need HELP!!! NOT STARTING!!! WTF!!!

Have fun...

that said I know there is 4 bolts on the differential end of the driveshaft, I cannot remember whats on the other end because I dont take it out (i drop the diff as mentioned before). But I also have a lift and trans jack so thats kinda out of the question in the driveway/garage.

I would mark the driveshaft and the companion flange, orientation, misorienting them can cause vibrations, i REALLY like steel tip paint pens, the ones where you can squeeze then you press the ball point into the item and it releases paint. By far my favorite of the paint pen variety.

Re: Need HELP!!! NOT STARTING!!! WTF!!!

Yes, 4 bolts at the diff and 6 little ones on the TC. I agree with marking the shaft and flange on the TC and diff. It's tight and a pain in the ass job for sure.
I was able to move the shaft back enough to get the starter out but you cannot remove it entirely because it hits the gas tank. In order to remove the shaft from the vehicle, you'd have to unbolt the cross member holding the trans and lower it. Thankfully I did not have to do that!
