New rotors already?!

My 2014 GC Laredo is in the shop (jeep service) - they just called me saying i need to brakes and rotors. 70,000km - new rotors? Does this make sense? They said they normally replace the rotors when they replace the pads, and that my rotors are rusting - are they trying to screw me??

So you're over 40k miles? May need to be replaced. Are you the handy type? Rotors and brakes are about the easiest parts to swap out. To remove the rust, I usually shoot them with WD-40 and let it sit.

Re: New rotors already?!

Are they saying the rotors are rusting?
As in the braking surface of the rotors?
That's normal.
If you look at your rotors after a car wash, mud puddle run, etc. they rust on the braking surface. And a few brake stops later, it is all gone.

I'm running just under 50K miles and the dealer said I had all sorts of pad life left, even though I tend to hang out on mountain highways pretty much every weekend, but a lot depends on your driving style.

A lot of places will now want to replace rotors with pads rather than trying to turn them smooth without going below thickness.

If you want a second opinion, ask a brakes plus tech...

Re: New rotors already?!

When I hang pads on the fleet here, I just get new rotors. Not worth the time and hassle of having the rotors turned.. and then ending up with a pulsation..
