Noise From Rear End When Driving.

I have a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 108,000 miles on it.

I hear the noise emanating from the rear of my jeep when driving with the windows up. The noise is similar to the sound a commercial jet makes when flying overhead. The noise starts around 10 MPH and gets a bit louder with speed. The sound is most pronounced at speeds below 25 MPH while costing. This is probably due to the lack of wind and engine noise that would otherwise mask the sound.

Any ideas what the cause of this sound is?

Note: I replaced the rear differential gear oil about 20,000 miles ago. After doing so, both axle seals started leaking. I replaced the axle seals, bushing, and bearings as required.

Re: Noise From Rare End When Driving.

Did you check the fluid level now? It could be low. You changed the bearings in the axles, but did you also change the bearings of the diff itself? They can be the culprit, or the ring and pinion gear. If the level is ok, then you have to take a sample after driving a bit and see if there is any metal in the fluid.

Re: Noise From Rare End When Driving.

I have checked the fluid levels with my finger via the fill hole and the fluid is filled to just below the fill plug. In addition, the fluid is clear. I did not detect any metal partials with my finger although I assume the magnet in the dif cover would catch any metal in the fluid.

I did NOT replace the bearings of the differential itself. Everything in the differential is original including the pinion gear and bearings.

Re: Noise From Rear End When Driving.

Also have a look at the U-joints of the aft propeller shaft. A bad bearing in there could also start making noise. But if the noise is a whining, its probably inside the diff. When no metal in the fluid and the sound not too bad, i would wait until it becomes too bad.

Re: Noise From Rear End When Driving.

I had a lady friend in the Jeep the other day and well, let just say she is not mechanically inclined. She even she said “what is that noise?” That was it! I took the Jeep to my mechanic who took the Jeep for a test drive. He heard the noise too. He is going to attach microphones to the front and rear dif/axels to isolate the noise.

I will let you guys know the outcome.
