Angry p0153 - 5 month headache

2008 Grand Cherokee Limited 90,000 miles. We have been trying to find the source of this code for five months have no idea what to try next. To start, we hear what sounds like an exhaust leak when driving, fuel injectors are incredibly loud at idle and most recently the car stalled while at a red light. Have tried the following to fix it:
purchased all new O2 sensors
Changed spark plugs
Replaced EGR
Changed exhaust manifold gasket - passenger
PCM reflash
PCV replaced
Smoke tested the exhaust (twice) no leaks found

This code keeps coming back after 30-45 miles after cleared and we are averaging 15 MPG. Any advice on where to look next would be MUCH appreciated .

The exhaust leak sound you may be hearing could be an actual exhaust leak which could throw that code. I know you said you did a smoke test but the engine under load could be making that leak apparent. So with that said you should visually inspect the mid pipes and the manifolds and also the wiring from the 02 all the way back.

Secondly, double check that your headers and mid pipes are torqued down properly. On my old 5.7 the lower bolt closest to the fire wall loosened up bit.

Lastly, if your cats aren't flowing correctly sometimes and its rare but could be a possibility it will pop that code because the exhaust isn't flowing fast enough by the sensor and the computer notices this as a slow response but its not bad enough to warrant a downstream 02 code.

***I forgot to add, what brand 02 sensor are you using? Sometimes aftermarket ones can cause this...

Re: p0153 - 5 month headache

We put in NTK sensors. When my husband replaced the manifold gasket we both went over the manifold for any hairline cracks or signs of an exhaust leak and found nothing. He cleaned the throttle body tonight which seems to have fixed the low idling issue we had when the car stalled. It's confusing because the sound (leak) seems to be louder on the drivers side, but the cel is for the passenger side. I agree, it's probably an exhaust leak but even with a stethoscope we can't narrow down exactly where it's coming from. Is it normal for these fuel injectors to be this loud? Thanks for your advice. My husband also plans on taking off the cats to check for leaks.

You can try swapping the injectors to the other sides to rule them out if they are worrying you. But ya the injectors are noisy especially if you are using a stethoscope or long screwdriver to listen...

Did you trace the wiring from that 02's sensor back and also look at the connector for any issues?

Best of luck I'm trying to think of every possibility

Re: p0153 - 5 month headache

My husband said he is going to trying switching the fuel injectors around. The injectors are loud enough that sitting in the Jeep (with windows down) you can clearly hear the ticking (very loud ticking). Husband swears it's an exhaust leak because of how deep the sound is, but its the same tick as the injectors, just deeper and faster when accelerating , if that makes sense? However, he's a mechanic so there is no way I am right and he's wrong . The sound almost goes away if in park or neutral and is really loud when accelerating. Just getting very tired of throwing $50 bucks every week at it and getting zero results. Thanks again for your help.

Re: p0153 - 5 month headache

Well, cat was taken down to double check for any tiny leaks and found nothing, checked the O2 wiring, switched the injectors around and changed the injectors o rings. Still getting a p0153 (with an occasional p2098) and the ticking hasn't changed. Car stalled once again at a red light.
One additional note is the car has gone through a half quart of oil in approximately 2 months (about 1000 miles) and it seems to be leaking at the (new) pcv. Has anyone experienced this before and is it normal? Taking it in for a BG induction cleaning next. If we can't find this problem soon I'm torn between continuing to throw money at it or driving it into a river lol . Good luck with anyone else battling this code and any advice anyone has is still very very welcomed!!
