Re: Picture of key with circle around it and slash

Happy new year.
The first thing you should try is telling us what jeep/model/year/engine you have.
The key symbol is most probably from the SKIM system (sentry key immobilizer system). When the SKIM doesnīt see a valid key, it will lit the light and the engine would normally start, but shut down after a few seconds. If it even doesnīt start, then the problem can be something else, but we first need to know which jeep you have.

Re: Picture of key with circle around it and slash

The jeep I have is a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee special ed. with a 4.0 engine,
My wife said it never cranked, it just spin over. I've checked dudes and took positive battery cable off and pc/engine fuse out for 15 minutes. I pushed reset and c/f. buttons on overhead console and turned ignition on,
it ran systems check and it said it passed.
That's all I've figured out to do through Google search. Only thing I think left is the key I believe, ANYTHING ELSE I CAN TRY BEFORE HAVING TO TOW IT TO DEALER??

Re: Picture of key with circle around it and slash

That the engine turns over during starting, is called cranking. In your case it cranks, but doesnīt start. Do you have a spare key to try?
If not, do the volt meter and fuel level indicator indicate normally?

Re: Picture of key with circle around it and slash

So this is most probably not a problem with the key nor the SKIM, but the PCI data bus is dead. There are many possibilities for this to happen, but i would start removing the connector from the crank position sensor and switch ignition in run. Donīt try to start, because it wonīt, but you have to check if the volt and fuel gauges are working again. If they do, you will need to replace the crank sensor. An internally shorted crank sensor can bring the PCI bus down. Also the cam sensor and MAP sensor can do this, but its mostly the crank sensor. Let me know how it works out.
Also, did you check the right fuses? #6, #19 and #26 in the PDC under the hood and #12 on the junction block under the steering wheel.

Frango 100, Thank you so very much, it was the crankshaft position sensor, you are unbelievably smart, you dont know how much i appreciate y p ur help, I replaced the sensor for $40.00 instead of several hundred dollars for the Jeep dealer to diagnose and fix it. Thank you so much, EVERYONE OUT THERE NEEDS TO TAKE THIS MANS ADVISE, HE KNOWS WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT.

Re: Picture of key with circle around it and slash

Hi there

After many frustrating hours of googling this has been the most helpful post I have been able to find

Have a 2002 grand Cherokee limited diesel (crd 2.7??) and problem seems exactly the same including voltage and fuel gauge not working and diagnostics just finishing with 'done'

Now want to move on to checking crank sensor but cannot find it....

Please help?

Thank you

The crank sensor is located on top of bell housing right where the engine and bell housing bolt together, I found the easiest way to access it is to go under the jeep on drivers side and and reach up the side of bell housing to almost top and you will find the crank sensor, be prepared, you will do most of this by feel.
Luckily there is only 2 bolts holding the crank sensor in. But replacing the crank sensor fixed mine, saving me 300.00 just to have it diagnosed at the jeep dealer not counting parts and labor, hopefully this will fix yours. If you have any more questions or can't figure it out , email me at jaxfire307@gmail.com and I'll send you my phone number.
Good Luck
Jimmy
