Rear Brake lock-up on 2003 Liberty! Help!

My son has a 2003 Liberty Limited and was driving it yesterday when he noticed a 'burning' smell. Turned out that the right rear brake was locked or 'stuck' and definately rubbing the rotor. When he stopped accelerating, the vehicle slowed to a stop quite abruptly. Local 'tire store' mechanic said it would take replacing a multitude of parts and cost about $800. Looking at some blogs, it seems this is not a unique problem with Liberty's of this year. Any suggestions that don't involve replacing the whole rear brake system. A quick response would be appreciated.

what did he recommend changing? Is it caliper or shoes?

Re: Rear Brake lock-up on 2003 Liberty! Help!

Mechanic said it would need new rotors (he wanted to replace both sides), new calipers, pad, hoses (?)...basically a complete new rear brake replacement. When asked if he could just 'repair' the locked wheel, he said he wouldn't work on it at all unless he could do 'the whole job'. Needless to say, we're not getting that warm and fuzzy feeling about this guy.

$800 for that? Check the prices....Im pretty sure you could do it for 1/3rd that. You may want to look into new rotors, pads and the one caliper. You could also rebuild that one bad caliper if you feel up to it.
